Old Overholt’s Extra Aged Cask Strength Rye Series
Old Overholt’s history dates to 1810, when Abe Overholt assumed management of his family’s rye whiskey operation at the West Overton Farmstead in Pennsylvania. Production later moved to Kentucky after the brand became part of Beam through its acquisition of the National Distillers brands. The revival of Old Overholt began in 2017 and eventually included the Extra Aged Cask Strength series.
According to the James B. Beam website, Old Overholt is the “Longest Standing American Whiskey brand in US history – Maintained continuously since 1810”. Originally it was a Monongahela-style rye, having a very high percentage of rye in its mash bill. However, after production moved to Kentucky, Beam produced it as a Kentucky-style rye, lowering the rye content and adding a fairly high corn content. To pay homage to this whiskey’s history, in 2024 Beam released A. Overholt Monongahela Mash Straight Rye Whiskey which has a higher rye mash bill and no corn, more similar to the original style.
The 2026 Old Overholt Extra Aged Cask Strength 11 Year Rye is the fourth annual release in the series. The first three editions were a 10-year rye bottled at 121 proof in 2023, an 11-year rye bottled at 107.4 proof in 2024, and a 12-year rye bottled at 117 proof in 2025.
For 2026, Old Overholt returned to an 11-year age statement. The rye was distilled and barreled in the fall of 2014 and aged in three warehouses in Clermont, Kentucky. It was bottled unfiltered and at cask strength at 125.6 proof.

Tasting Notes — 2026 Old Overholt Extra Aged Cask Strength 11 Year Rye Review
Let’s taste it:
🛏 Rested: 15 minutes in a Glencairn glass
👉🏻 Nose: Mild simple syrup sweetness; rye spices like cloves; raspberry jam; sweet oak; alcohol vapor noticeable but less than expected for the proof; hint of milk chocolate
👉🏻 Taste: Rye spices, dark cherries, and sweet oak; toffee after a few sips
👉🏻 Finish: Moderate black pepper and mild oak; becomes quite dry; mild dry wood develops at the end, with mild char and lingering spice; long, with lasting warmth
Higher Proof with a Surprisingly Restrained Nose
While there is no hiding that 2026 Old Overholt Extra Aged Cask Strength 11 Year Rye is a fairly high-proof rye, the alcohol vapor is not as pronounced as I would have expected. The nose has a mild simple syrup sweetness with noticeable rye spices and oak that is subtle at first but becomes more pronounced over time. In the background is pleasant raspberry jam, along with just the most subtle hint of milk chocolate.
The taste is a combination of rye spices, sweet dark cherries, and oak, with a touch of toffee appearing after a few sips. The finish becomes drier and spicier, with black pepper, dry wood, and mild char. It is long, with lasting warmth.
Another Excellent Extra-Aged Old Overholt Release
I have been a huge fan of these extra-aged Old Overholt releases, so I had high hopes for this year’s release. I expected it to be 13 years old because that seemed to be the direction they were going, but I’m fine with 11 years. In fact, 2026 Old Overholt Extra Aged Cask Strength 11 Year Rye is everything I expected it to be. It has mature flavors, with just the right amount of heat and fruit to make a well-rounded pour. If you are a fan of mature rye flavors and enjoy the extra punch that a higher proof can provide, then you’ll want to give this rye a try! Have you had it? What did you think? Cheers!🥃
