Oaklore Four Grain Bourbon Review

Oaklore Four Grain Bourbon is a small batch bourbon produced at sister distilleries in Kentucky and North Carolina. The bourbon blends 5–6-year-old wheated and rye bourbon barrels, which are re-barreled for secondary aging in North Carolina’s Piedmont region. The result is a balanced and approachable 92-proof bourbon with layered notes of fruit, spice, oak and tannins that deepen with time. Oaklore Four Grain Bourbon is a great option for those who enjoy complexity at a lower proof. Read our review to learn all about it!

Oaklore Distilling History

Founded in 2017, Oaklore Distilling Co. emerged from a friendship and shared passion for well-crafted whiskey. A chance encounter between neighbors, now co-founders, Thomas Bogan and Matt Simpkins, while walking their kids to the bus stop, led them on their journey. Along with their friend Travis Masters, Oaklore Distilling was developed. Their distillery and tasting room are located on the edge of both Matthews and Charlotte, North Carolina.

The Specifics

Composite Mash Bill: 72% Corn, 11% Wheat, 10% Rye, 7% Malted Barley
Aged: 5-6 Years
Distilled in: North Carolina & Kentucky
Secondary Aging Location: North Carolina’s Piedmont Region
Secondary Barrels: Variety of cooperages, char levels 2-4.
Non Chill-Filtered

Oaklore Four Grain Bourbon is crafted at their sister distilleries in Kentucky and North Carolina using 24-inch Vendome copper column stills. The two bourbons are batched to achieve the final mash bill. The bourbon combines hand-selected 5–6-year-old wheated and rye bourbon barrels, which are then re-barreled for an additional 8–12 months of aging in non-temperature-controlled palletized warehouses in North Carolina’s Piedmont region. Oaklore uses #2, #3 and #4 char level barrels and multiple cooperages to “achieve consistency and a flavorful bourbon that’s not overwhelmed by wood influences.”
