Barrell Seagrass
Rye whiskey finished in Martinique Rum, Madeira & Apricot Brandy barrels
119.3 Proof
Review
On the back label of the Barrell Seagrass bottle, Joe Beatrice says: “Seagrass is a blend of American and Canadian rye whiskeys, meticulously sourced and finished in casks from three distinct areas of the world. It highlights the grassy ocean side notes we love in rye and the opulence and spice of finishing barrels. It’s bottled at cask strength so you can appreciate its true flavor.”
According to the label, the ryes used for this blend are aged in Kentucky, Indiana and Tennessee. As the name Seagrass implies, this rye is meant to evoke thoughts of the coast, beach and sea through its unique flavor profile.
Tasting Notes
Let’s taste it:
🛏 Rested for 20 minutes in a Glencairn
👉🏻Nose: Citrus, cedar, dried apricot, pineapple, vanilla, baking spices, hint of coconut; relatively mild alcohol for proof
👉🏻Taste: Caramel, baking spices, honey sweetness, dried apricot, notes of rum and brandy, light char
👉🏻Finish: Fruitiness like apricot fruit punch piña colada, with some char, a nice Kentucky hug, and a long finish with lingering grape
There’s a reason this rye won a Double Gold in the San Francisco World Spirits Competition this year! This is one complex rye loaded with all sorts of flavors! The contributions from all of the barrels really combine nicely and compliment the rye. I think I notice the rum and brandy most in the nose and taste, and the Madeira most in the finish.
Summary
I was a bit late to the game on this Barrell Seagrass, and I know many of you have already tried it and posted about it. I have to say, I am always a little hesitant about Barrell. It’s not that I have ever had one of their whiskeys that I didn’t like. On the contrary, I have enjoyed them all. It’s just that their offerings are so varied, that I am never sure what I’ll be getting. I know that’s the point and I should just have faith that it will be good. Well, I absolutely love this rye, so I won’t be hesitating before trying whatever they release next!
Have you had this one? What’s you favorite Barrell bourbon, rye, rum and/or other whiskey? Cheers!🥃
