Belle Meade Black Belle Bourbon is part of the Belle Meade Craftsman Cask Collection. This bourbon exemplifies the circle of life. The folks at Nelson’s Green Brier Distillery first age their Belle Meade Bourbon 10-11 years. The barrels are dumped, and then head to the Blacksone Brewing Co. where they are filled with Blackstone’s Black Belle Imperial Stout, which is infused with cocoa nibs. The stout ages for 7 months, the barrels are emptied and then refilled with Belle Meade Bourbon for another 12 months. The end result is this amazing bourbon!
Nelson’s Green Brier Distillery
For those not familiar with Nelson’s Green Brier Distillery, they produce two lines of whiskey. Their own distillate, Nelson’s Green Brier Tennessee Whiskey, and the Belle Meade line, utilizing bourbon sourced from MGP. Additional aging and finishing take place at Nelson’s Green Brier Distillery. Belle Meade bourbon predated their own whiskey. However, Belle Meade Bourbon is so good that it continues on even though their own whiskey has matured and gone to market. Tasting Notes
Let’s taste it:
🛏 Rested for 20 minutes in a Glencairn
👉🏻Nose: Milk chocolate, rye spices, caramel, birthday cake frosting, simple sugar sweetness and a light graininess. Moderate alcohol.
👉🏻Taste: Caramel, oak, rye spices, subtle milk chocolate
👉🏻Finish: Caramel and oak continue, oak and char build, and rich milk chocolate becomes more apparent throughout the long finish. Moderate alcohol burn.
Summary
Belle Meade Black Belle Bourbon is a delicious bourbon. I love Imperial Stouts, and I love bourbon, so for me this is a match made in heaven! I haven’t been fortunate enough to try any prior releases, but I understand that last year the proof was significantly lower. So, if you thought last year’s release might have needed a little more “oomph”, you are in for a pleasant surprise!
