Blanton’s Bourbon History
The story goes that Elmer T. Lee, while culminating his tenure at Buffalo Trace Distillery (which I think was the George T. Stagg Distillery at the time), created this bourbon brand. He had recalled that Colonel (as in Kentucky Colonel, not military Colonel) Albert B. Blanton, former president of the distillery, would pick barrels from the center of Warehouse H to be served to his guests. So Elmer picked barrels from Warehouse H to be bottled and sold as the first bottled single barrel bourbon in 1984.
Since that time, Blanton’s Single Barrel Bourbon has become highly sought after and relatively difficult to obtain. So what’s it like? Well, they are all single barrels, so your results may vary, but here’s what my most recent bottle was like:
Tasting Notes
Let’s taste it:
🛏 Rested for 15 minutes in a Glencairn
👉🏻Nose: Dried apricots, cherries, sweet light caramel, brown sugar, light rye spices, some oak and leather; fairly sweet overall; moderate alcohol
👉🏻Taste: Black tea, light honey, simple syrup, oak; full mouthfeel
👉🏻Finish: The flavors and sweetness all continue into the finish. There’s increasing black pepper, oak, dryness and spice at the end, although the sweetness hangs on as well. Medium finish with relatively mild burn
Summary
This is quite a sweet bourbon, with fairly full, rich, classic intermediate aged bourbon flavors. The more mature flavors are there, but they are not overpowering. Back in the day, this was the bourbon I would use to introduce people to bourbon. Now-a-days that’s not practical since I like to give people something they can go buy for themselves, not something they might have to stand in line for. It’s a good bourbon, and at retail, something I will buy every time.
