According to the website: “Founder’s Anniversary Blend is a yearly marriage of whiskeys to commemorate our anniversary.”

Chattanooga released their first whiskey in April of 2012. The Anniversary Blend has been released yearly, and varies from year to year.

The Chattanooga Whiskey Founder’s 11th Anniversary Blend

For the 11th edition, the whiskeys which were blended are:
-25% 1816 Reserve: 75% corn, 21% rye, & 4% malted barley; aged >4 years; Distilled in Indiana
-50% 91 Barrel, Tennessee High Malt: Yellow Corn, Malted Rye, Caramel Malted Barley & Honey Malted Barley; aged >2 years; Distilled in Chattanooga
-25% Infinity Barrel: Blend of Straight Whiskeys; aged >3 years; Distilled in Indiana

These three whiskeys are solera style according to the Chattanooga website. There are a variety of ways to do the solera method ranging from using one big vat to make a continuous blend, to transferring whiskey between multiple barrels of different ages. I have not yet visited Chattanooga Whiskey, so am uncertain of their methods. However, based on the information in the press release, it seems that they likely use the one large vat method, with theirs being made by Foeder Crafters of America (St. Louis, MO) .

Tasting Notes – Chattanooga Whiskey Founder’s 11th Anniversary Blend Review

Let’s taste it:

? Rested for 15 minutes in a Glencairn

??Nose: Sweet cherry fruit punch, raspberry jam, sugary sweetness, mild cedar and char; a bit of cinnamon and lightly burnt caramel; subtle floral notes, like roses and a hint of char; relatively mild alcohol
??Taste: Sweet cherry candy, but with a bit of tanginess, too; caramel & cinnamon are present as well
??Finish: Tannins, char and white pepper spice grow throughout the finish; sweet cherry candy and raspberry jam linger; there’s a bit of cocoa powder, and dry oak later on, too; long finish; moderate burn

This whiskey starts out quite sweet, with cherry candy, raspberry jam and fruit punch being the dominant flavors. However, it finishes with tannins and spice, although some of the cherry, jam and sweetness do remain to the end. I enjoy that transition from sweet to dry, as it is almost cleansing to my palate, readying my taste buds for the next sip.

The Founder’s Anniversary Blend’s nose changes with time

An interesting thing about the nose, that has been repeatable for me over a few days, is that I don’t get the lightly burnt caramel in the nose at all initially, but after a couple of sips I find it quite noticeable. Caramel also becomes more evident in the taste. It is always interesting to me the flavors that come out in a whiskey after I get acclimated to the more dominant ones.

Chattanooga Founder’s Anniversary Blend is a very enjoyable whiskey

This is a very enjoyable whiskey. My tasting notes differ from the distillery’s, as they almost always do. For me, the cherry candy, cherry fruit punch and raspberry jam are the dominant flavors through the nose and taste until they make a U turn into the spice lane for the finish. If you enjoy those sweeter fruit notes, then definitely give Chattanooga Whiskey Founder’s 11th Anniversary Blend a try!
