Let’s taste it:
🛏 Rested for 15 minutes in a Glencairn
👉🏻Nose: Green apple, baking spices, bubblegum with simple syrup sweetness and a hint of cedar; light alcohol
👉🏻Taste: Honey, caramel & apple juice, with a touch of white pepper and baking spices; fairly full mouthfeel for its proof
👉🏻Finish: White pepper spiciness increases quickly, honey sweetness lingers; light tobacco appears towards the end; short – medium finish with little alcohol burn
A pleasant surprise
This bourbon surprised me. I have had many younger MGP bourbons (I am assuming this is from MGP), and none of them have tasted like this. When I put my nose to the glass, the first thing I thought of was Ancient Ancient Age. This has a surprisingly full mouthfeel and is fairly sweet from start to finish. The white pepper that rapidly comes to the forefront in the finish was unexpected, but it does a nice job balancing out the sweetness. There is not a ton of complexity, but that would be unexpected at 86 proof and 2 years age. If you are looking for a nice bourbon for a hot summer day, or for your friends who like their whiskey at a lower proof, then I think you would be pleased with this bourbon and its less than $30 price tag.
For full transparency, this bottle was provided to me at no cost, but that in no way influences my review. In fact, I was a little worried what I would say before I tried it, because I am one of those people who generally reaches for a 110+ proof pour and often finds lower proof bourbons lacking. Fortunately, my worries were for naught. This is definitely something that I would pour when I’m wanting a bourbon of a bit lower proof. Have you had Country Smooth Bourbon? What did you think? Cheers!🥃
