So who’s a fan of Tennessee Whiskey, err… I mean bourbon? I don’t want to start the whole “is Tennessee Whiskey bourbon debate” (spoiler alert: it is😊), but I think it seems pretty clear that the folks at George Dickel think it is.
So why would one of the well known Tennessee whiskey distillers decide to make a bourbon? Well, we know that there are many older “bourbons” on the market right now that were “distilled in Tennessee”. That’s pretty much synonymous with being sourced from Dickel. So why not release their own? I guess they figured they would! So what Nicole Austin, General Manager & Distiller of the Cascade Hollow Distilling Company, did was select barrels from their aged stock which had characteristics more similar to those expected in a bourbon. Voilà – George Dickel Bourbon was born!

84% corn, 8% rye, 8% malted barley
Tasting notes
Let’s taste it:
🛏 Rested for 10 minutes in a Glencairn
👉🏻Nose: Honey, light minerals, caramel, peach, sweet plums, raisin (becomes more noticeable after the first sip), cedar; moderate alcohol burn
👉🏻Taste: Simple syrup sweetness, light caramel, mild oak, mild minerals;
👉🏻Finish: Sweetness continues into the finish. Light minerals linger and some char and oak builds with some black pepper at the end. Moderately long finish. Mild burn.
So the flavors on this are interesting. I think I would know it was Dickel if I tried it blind. The minerals (aka Flintstone’s Vitamins) are definitely there, but they are not overpowering. There’s a surprisingly large amount of alcohol in the nose for a 90 proof bourbon, but that doesn’t carry through to the taste and finish. Likewise, the somewhat complex flavors and lots of fruit in the nose turn into fairly non-complex flavors in the taste and finish.
Summary
So what’s the verdict? I really don’t know. If you are a Dickel fan, then you probably enjoy having those classic Dickel flavors, albeit not so much as in their Tennessee Whisky. (Dickel spells whisky without the “e”) If you are not a Dickel fan, you probably don’t want those flavors at all. Or maybe you do. I started out feeling ambivalent about it, but then when I finished my glass I wanted another pour.🤷🏻♂️ I paid 30.99 for this bottle, which I think is basically MSRP, so the price of admission is pretty reasonable for an 8 year old bourbon. So if you are on the fence, go ahead and give it a try!
