Elijah Craig Barrel Proof – One of my favorites
Elijah Craig Barrel Proof is one of my favorite bourbons. I look forward to each of the thrice yearly releases with great anticipation. Fortunately, I no longer have to explain to my wife why I need another one; she now also appreciates how different (yet also similar) each batch is. So, when I heard that Heaven Hill Distillery was adding ECBP to their single barrel program, I was needless to say, very excited.
Tell Me About Elijah Craig Barrel Proof Private Barrels
The regular releases of Elijah Craig Barrel Proof Bourbon are small batches, and bear a 12 year age statement. The Private Barrels tend to be a bit younger and I have seen them anywhere from 8 years old and up, with most probably in the 9-10 yr range. Being single barrels, they are going to have some unique characteristics, along with the ECBP flavors that I expect. The folks at Frootbat.com were kind enough to send me this bottle to review.
Tasting Notes – Elijah Craig Barrel Proof Bourbon – Private Barrel
Let’s taste it:
🛏 Rested for 15 minutes in a Glencairn
👉🏻Nose: Sweet, fruity and even floral with stone fruits, like cherries and plums; brown sugar, caramel, vanilla, crème brûlée, milk chocolate, cedar & rye bread; hint of coffee grounds at the end; moderate alcohol
👉🏻Taste: Stone fruits, brown sugar, caramel, chocolate and sweetness continue; oak, char, the proof and lightly burnt molasses become more noticeable
👉🏻Finish: Char, oak, black pepper spice and light smoke become increasingly prominent, but caramel, molasses and fruit sweetness linger to the end. Long finish with noticeable burn
So much fruit!
As has been my experience with Elijah Craig Barrel Proof single barrels, this one has familiar flavors, but brings its own character to the table. I don’t think I have had an ECBP before with such complexity to its nose and so much fruit! Initially the proof is not that evident, but there’s no hiding 126.6. As the sip goes on, the alcohol is all there, as I would expect from an ECBP!
What I expected, and then some
This ECBP bourbon has certainly delivered on what I would expect from a store pick! It’s got the familiar flavors that I love, with the addition of quite a bit of unexpected stone fruits. A unique pour for sure! Are you an Elijah Craig Barrel Proof fan?
