Who are the Fighting 69th?
Fighting 69th Irish Whiskey is named after the Fighting 69th Regiment of the U.S. Army. According to the distillery, the Fighting 69th was founded in 1849 as a New York State Irish militia. The 69th has fought as a US Army Infantry Regiment in major engagements from the Civil War to modern day Iraq and Afghanistan. So, with that amazing heritage, the members of the Fighting 69th needed an appropriate whiskey with which to toast. Thus, Fighting 69th Irish Whiskey was born.
One dollar of every bottle sold goes to support the Sixty-Ninth Infantry Regiment Historical Trust, a 501-c-3 not-for-profit foundation. The Trust’s purpose is to preserve the history and traditions of the Regiment. In addition, the Trust provides financial and other assistance to unit members, veterans, and/or their families.
So, what are the specific of Fighting 69th Irish Whiskey?
Fighting 69th Irish Whiskey is triple copper pot-distilled and aged in Ireland. However, the exact distillery(ies) are undisclosed. Three different mashbills are used. In addition, each mashbill is distilled separately. The distillates are each individually aged a minimum of 3 years in once used ex-bourbon barrels. Then, each is finished in a variety of different casks and barrels. Finally, the finished whiskeys are blended to create the final product.
Tasting Notes – Fighting 69th Irish Whiskey
Let’s taste it:
🛏 Rested for 15 minutes in a Glencairn
👉🏻Nose: Pear, honey, butterscotch & hints of sherry; oak; soft with barely noticeable alcohol
👉🏻Taste: Honey sweetness, pear & soft buttery caramel
👉🏻Finish: The flavors continue into the finish, gain a little oak and tea, and then pick up a bit of mild char and light black pepper spice at the end. The finish is fairly long for the proof and there’s a light burn.
Summary
Fighting 69th Irish Whiskey is a very easy drinking whiskey. It has soft flavors, sweetness and pleasant pear notes. Since it is a soft, low proof pour, it is a whiskey I could easily drink outside during the hot summer days that are rapidly approaching. If those flavors are something that strikes your fancy, then definitely give it a try!
