Out with the 6 Year. In with the 7 Year.
The Heaven Hill 7 Year Bottled-In-Bond Bourbon replaced their 6yr old Bottled-In-Bond, which had been one of my favorite value bourbons. The 7 year Bottled-In-Bond Bourbon was first launched in October 2019, with a limited distribution that mysteriously did not include Kentucky. The suggested retail price was $39.99, substantially higher than the 6yr that it replaced. The squared edges of the 6yr’s bottle were replaced with rounded ones, the label became more refined, and the plastic screw top was replaced with a real cork and wooden cap.
So what else is different about it? Well, the mash bill is the same as the 6yr, similar to most of Heaven Hill’s bourbons: 78% corn, 10% rye and 12% malted barley. It could be aged in different rickhouses and/or on different floors, but that information is not provided. So is it any better than the much less expensive 6yr and worth the higher price? Let’s find out!
Tasting Notes
Let’s taste Heaven Hill 7 Year Bottled-In-Bond Bourbon:
🛏 Rested for 25 minutes in a Glencairn
👉🏻Nose: Chocolate, honey, vanilla, rich caramel, sweet cherries, subtle peanuts & cedar with a light alcohol burn
👉🏻Taste: Caramel, tea, sugar sweetness, hint of cherry, light oak and char
👉🏻Finish: Some sweetness and cherry persists with fairly rapidly building oak and char, as well as some peanuts. Fairly long finish with light burn.
What’s the verdict on Heaven Hill 7 Year Bottled-In-Bond Bourbon?
The 7yr has richer, fuller flavors, from the nose to the finish. While both of these bourbons are very good, the extra year of aging and upscale bottling (😁) really seem to have a positive effect on the bourbon’s flavor. Unlike its extinct cousin, Heaven Hill Bottled-In-Bond 7 Year Bourbon does not proclaim itself to be charcoal filtered. That may be having some effect on the fuller flavor as well.
Summary
I wanted to hate this bourbon since it is not sold in Kentucky. Unfortunately, it turns out that I like it.🤷🏻♂️ Whisky Advocate named this bourbon #4 in its list of the top 20 whiskies of 2019, so they seem to think it is pretty good, too. What about you? Have you tried it? Cheers!🥃
