According to Michigan’s tourism website, michigan.org, the Wolverine state is home to 53 distilleries. Amongst these 53, family-owned Iron Fish Distillery is proud to be the state’s first farm distillery since prohibition. It is located in the northwestern part of the Michigan mitten in the small town of Thompsonville. The distillery is a quick 20 minute drive southeast of Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore and just under an hour’s drive southwest from Traverse City.
Iron Fish Distillery was established in 2016. It is located on an historic 120 acre farm that was first inhabited back in 1887. They are using sustainable practices to operate their distillery and to grow some of the rye and wheat used in their spirits. Vodka, gin, rum and whiskeys are distilled on-site. However, they have been sourcing bourbon and finishing it in a wide variety of barrels while their own whiskey ages.
Iron Fish Distillery recently released the first whiskeys of their Estate Series. Iron Fish makes the Estate Series whiskeys (in part) from grains grown on the farm. They are 100% distilled and aged at Iron Fish Distillery. During our visit, we had the opportunity to try two of those whiskeys. They were both wheat whiskeys and were very good. My favorite was the four grain, named Mad Angler Whiskey!
