Another Value Bottled In Bond Bourbon From Heaven Hill
T.W. Samuels Bottled in Bond Bourbon is another value Bottled In Bond bourbon produced by Heaven Hill Distillery. Like J.W. Dant & J.T.S. Brown, T.W. Samuels was an old brand that is now owned by Heaven Hill.
What’s In A Name?
Do you recognize the name Samuels? Well, this was their family brand prior to the inception of Maker’s Mark. Unfortunately, the original distillery had burned down, but the rebuilt distillery remains today. Although it had served as a bottled water company for a while after distilling operations shut down in the early 1950s, it has since fallen into disrepair. Recently, it has been resurrected as the Old Steelhouse Distillery. The current proprietors have ambitious plans for the property; their goal is to make it a destination, complete with a restaurant, bar, tasting room and rental cottages. Visitors to the site can tour the grounds, visit a small museum and gain a wealth of information about T.W. Samuels history.
What About Today’s T.W. Samuels Bottled In Bond Bourbon?
But, I digress. Let’s get back to this bourbon. As far as I know, it is now made from Heaven Hill’s standard bourbon mash bill (78% corn, 10% rye and 12% malted barley), and that’s probably a good thing. It turns out that Bill Samuels, Sr thought the family bourbon was terrible. So when he started Maker’s Mark he ceremoniously burned the original family recipe.
The T.W. Samuels Bottled In Bond Bourbon is probably not aged much more than the required 4 years. In addition to this expression, which may be only available in Kentucky, there is also an 80 proof blended whiskey which seems more widely available.
Let’s taste it:
🛏 Rested for 15 minutes in a Glencairn
👉🏻Nose: Sweet, with toffee, honey, pear, cherry, cinnamon and light baking spices; mild alcohol
👉🏻Taste: Honey, caramel, toffee, cinnamon, oak; medium mouthfeel
👉🏻Finish: Cinnamon stays on, to be joined by black pepper spice which grows and lingers a while with a moderate burn. A touch of cigar ash comes out towards the end.
TW Samuels Bottled In Bond Bourbon is a very enjoyable bourbon. The flavors have really blossomed after the bottle has been open for a few days. TW Samuels has many similarities to Evan Williams Bottled In Bond bourbon, one of my favorite value Bottled In Bonds. Using Evan Williams as a reference, T.W. Samuels has a bit more fruit in the nose compared with Evan Williams’ baking spices, and more toffee and cinnamon overall. Evan Williams also has a little more “dryness” in the taste and finish. For 22 bucks for a handle, though, you can’t really go wrong with T.W. Samuels!
