Double Double Oaked Bourbon? What’s that??
Woodford Double Double Oaked Bourbon is an annual limited release from Woodford Reserve Distillery. It is part of Woodford Reserve’s Distillery series. First appearing in 2015, the Double Double Oaked bourbon was not released again until 2017. While initially remaining relatively unknown, it gradually gained popularity and has been an annual release ever since.
The Double Double Oaked Bourbon traditionally has been released in late January. This year, it was release on February 1. The bottles are labelled with the bottling date, rather than the release date; thus the 2022 release is labelled 2021. Confused? I am too.🙂
So how do they make Woodford Double Double Oaked?
You are likely familiar with Woodford Reserve’s Double Oaked Bourbon. It is fully matured Woodford Reserve Bourbon put into a second new oak barrel which has been heavily toasted and lightly charred. The bourbon ages in this barrel for about a year. The idea is that this second barrel will add the additional flavors that only a heavily toasted barrel can provide. The Woodford Double Double Oaked goes one step further. The bourbon remains in this second barrel for yet another year, extracting even more flavors from the heavily toasted oak. The result is a very full flavored 90.4 proof bourbon.
Tasting Notes
Let’s Taste Woodford Double Double Oaked Bourbon!
🛏Rested for 15 minutes in a Glencairn:
👉🏻Nose: Vanilla, burnt caramel, butterscotch, cherry
👉🏻Taste: A very full mouthfeel that coats the tongue. Tea, butterscotch, cherry, oak, sweet caramel
👉🏻Finish: Oak, butterscotch & cherry continue and some astringency develops. Sweetness lingers on as well. Fairly long finish.
Summary
I have been a huge fan of this bourbon ever since I first tasted it. For whatever reason, it seemed to fly under the radar for years. I would mention it to people, and they would think I was talking about the Double Oaked. Then, all of a sudden, the world discovered it. Now people line up on release day and it’s gone in a flash. It’s still one of my favorites, though. If you are a fan of “toasted” or double oaked bourbon, I think this is one you would definitely enjoy!
