Woodford Double Double Oaked Bourbon Review

Woodford Double Double Oaked 2020
Woodford Reserve
Double Double Oaked
Kentucky Straight Bourbon Whiskey

The Woodford Double Double Oaked Bourbon is a recurring limited release bourbon. It is part of Woodford Reserve’s Distillery series. First appearing in 2015, the Double Double Oaked bourbon has been released a few times since then. The most recent release being now, January 2021. I have really enjoyed this bourbon in the past. So, I had to get a couple of bottles of this latest release, which states on its label a bottling date of 2020.

Double Oaked is Woodford Reserve’s Kentucky Straight Bourbon put into a second new oak barrel which has been heavily toasted and lightly charred. It ages in this barrel for about a year. The idea is that this will add some additional barrel flavors that come from a heavily toasted barrel. The Woodford Double Double Oaked remains in this second barrel for yet another year, extracting even more flavors from the heavily toasted oak. The result is a very full flavored 90.4 proof bourbon.

Tasting Notes for 2019 Release

👉🏻Nose: Butterscotch, sweet caramel, leather, hint of cherry and chocolate
👉🏻Taste: A very full mouthfeel that coats the tongue. Tea, cherry, oak, sweet, caramel
👉🏻Finish: Oak, caramel, butterscotch and barrel char that continues for a fairly long finish. Sweetness lingers on as well.

Until last year, it seemed that no one had heard of Woodford Double Double Oaked Bourbon, even though it was first introduced in 2015. Everyone I have shared it with has loved it, so I was surprised to read the less than positive reviews of the earlier versions online. I realize now that I have a bottle of the original release from 2015, although I think I acquired it two years ago thinking that it was the 2018 release, so I have not yet tasted it. After reading the reviews though, maybe I shouldn’t….🤷🏻‍♂️ Either way, I do highly recommend the latest releases for anyone who enjoys a bourbon with lots of toasted barrel flavors. Who has had this one? What do you think of it? Did you get one this year? Cheers!🥃
