Straight Bourbon Whiskey

Bottling Date: 2020
90.4 proof
The Woodford Reserve Distillery Series is, according to their website: “An eclectic line of one-of-a-kind expressions, Distillery Series pushes the creative boundaries of whiskeys to the extreme.” The series includes the Double Double Oaked, Barrel Finished Rye, Sweet Mash Redux, Frosty Four Wood, Bottled in Bond, Three Grain, Four Grain, Five Malt, Blended Rye, Toasted Oak Rye, French Oak Cask Finished Rye and the latest release, the Woodford Reserve Five Wood.
The Five Wood is unique. The bourbon is first aged in traditional new charred oak barrels, but it is then finished in one of four different types of used barrels: Tawny and Ruby Port and Oloroso and Amontillado Sherry barrels. The whiskey finished in each of these barrels is then blended together to make the final product.
Tasting Notes
🛏 Rested for 25 minutes in a Glencairn
👉🏻Nose: Notes of dark fruit, port and sherry, light leather, caramel, oak
👉🏻Taste: Caramel, dark fruits, oak
👉🏻Finish: The dark fruit, sherry and port flavors persist. Char and oak become more evident throughout the fairly long finish
Summary
This is an interesting one. The first day I tasted it, more of the barrel flavors like butterscotch and vanilla dominated, and it reminded me of the Woodford Reserve Double Double Oaked. However, when I tasted it after the bottle had been open for a bit, the port and dark fruit became the more dominant flavors, with the traditional bourbon flavors fading to the background, and it is no longer at all like the Double Double Oaked. This bourbon gives a nice warming sensation, which would be perfect for a cold winter’s night, so I understand completely why they released it in the middle of summer…🤷🏻♂️ The warmth must come from the port and sherry, because the proof is fairly low.
