Ancient Ancient Age Bourbon Review

Ancient Ancient Age Bourbon, like Blanton's, is distilled at the Buffalo Trace Distillery in Frankfort, KY. But, like Blanton's, this brand, along with Elmer T. Lee and Rock Hill Farms, is actually owned by Age International, Inc, a subsidiary of Takara Shuzo, Ltd (based in Kyoto, Japan). When the Schenley Company (who introduced Ancient Age in 1938) sold the distillery and brand in 1983, Age International was formed. Age International was subsequently purchased by Takara Shuzo in 1991. Takara Shuzo retained the brands, but sold the distillery to Sazerac, which has handled their production ever since.

Distilled at Buffalo Trace, Owned by Age International

Ancient Ancient Age Bourbon, like Blanton’s, is distilled at the Buffalo Trace Distillery in Frankfort, KY. But, like Blanton’s, this brand, along with Elmer T. Not Quite 10 Years Old

At one time Ancient Ancient Age did carry a 10 year age statement. However now-a-days the 10 is still on the label, but it is over the word STAR and is no longer associated with the time this bourbon has spent aging. In fact, “Aged at least 36 months” can be found written in tiny letters on the neck label. So, the current version of this bourbon is clearly much younger than its predecessor.

Ancient Ancient Age Bourbon Tasting Notes

Let’s taste it:

🛏 Rested for 15 minutes in a Glencairn

👉Nose: Apple, caramel, light oak; mild baking spices; hint of leather and a touch of cherries; light alcohol is noticeable
👉Taste: Apple, caramel and light honey sweetness start giving way to some barrel char. The body is relatively light.
👉Finish: Apple and caramel fade, oak and barrel char build. Moderately long but relatively light finish which seems to sort of just fade away.

Summary

Ancient Ancient Age Bourbon has nice, light flavors and is quite easy to drink. It is not particularly complex and may leave you wanting for just a little bit more in the finish. None the less, it is enjoyable and certainly a good value for around 15 bucks for a liter. For me, this is a nice one to open up my palate for an evening tasting, or to enjoy outside on a warm summer evening. One of its only drawbacks, though, is that it can be a bit difficult to find. For example, it isn’t available in Kentucky, where I live, so I have to pick it up elsewhere when I travel.
