Finished in Japanese Mizunara Oak Casks
Angel’s Envy Bourbon Finished in Mizunara Oak Casks was released in honor of Angel’s Envy’s Founder’s Day, the day that the folks at Angel’s Envy filled their very first barrel. It is a blend of four year-old and nine year-old bourbons, then finished for two years in Japanese Mizunara oak casks for two more years. Only 1200 bottles were produced, so finding one of these isn’t easy. A good percentage of these sold out during an online pre-sale and on release day at the distillery. There subsequently was a very limited distribution of these bottles to bars/restaurants and retailers.
I failed at getting a bottle during the release, but fortunately I was able to purchase a pour recently.
The Angel’s Envy Bourbon Finished in Mizunara Oak Casks is a very interesting bourbon. I don’t think I have had anything quite like it before. I have pretty much no experience with Mizunara casks, except for the Broken Barrel Mizunara, (which I did like). This is nothing like that, though.
This is all caramel, honey & sweet oak, with a hint of milk chocolate. The finish was particularly interesting – and really good. I tasted the expected oak and a bit of char, but the honey sweetness just continued on, without any astringency.
Am I sorry I didn’t get a bottle of this? Yes. Am I happy I still have $349 (retail) to spend on more bourbon….well, not really. After having tasted this, it is definitely one that I would have liked to have had around.
Have you tried this bourbon? What did you think of it? Stay safe you all. Cheers!🥃
