Angel’s Envy Was A Pioneer
Angel’s Envy Distillery is unique. Right from their inception, they chose to finish all of their whiskeys in secondary barrels. While that is fairly common now-a-days, it was not nearly at all as widespread when Wes, and his father and Kentucky Bourbon Hall of Fame Master Distiller, Lincoln Henderson started the brand. Their flagship products are both a bourbon and a rye. Angel’s Envy Bourbon is finished in port wine barrels and Angel’s Envy Rye is finished in Caribbean rum barrels. In addition, there have been many special releases over the years, and those are all finished in secondary barrels as well.
Angel’s Envy Bourbon – The Details
Mash bill: 72% corn, 18% rye and 10% malted barley.
Age: Angel’s Envy bourbon is aged 4-6 years in new charred oak barrels, then finished for approximately 6 months in 60 gallon port barrels.
Let’s taste it:
🛏 Rested for 15 minutes in an Angel’s Envy Copita
👉🏻Nose: Mild, but noticeable, soft red port wine notes; mild cedar, oak and rye spices; subtle floral notes; fairly sweet; brown sugar & light caramel; mild alcohol
👉🏻Taste: Relatively light mouthfeel, with soft port, light caramel, mild sweetness and a little bit of tannins later on.
👉🏻Finish: Mild tannins continue with some increasing white pepper spice; port overtones continue in the background, with mild sweetness, and both gradually fading; fairly long, but soft finish with a nice warmth; mild burn
The Port Finish Is Noticeable, But Not Overpowering
Angel’s Envy Bourbon’s port finish is noticeable in the nose, and although it is dominant, it is fairly soft and provides a complimentary sweetness to the mild rye spices, cedar and oak. The wood notes shouldn’t be surprising given that two barrels are used; however they remain in the background and are relatively mild. The taste brings a soft mouthfeel with mild sweetness, light caramel and mild port flavors. In the finish, there are mild tannins and rising, but not overdone, white pepper spice. Later on, there’s a pleasant, lingering warmth.
Conclusion – Angel’s Envy Is An Easy Drinking Bourbon
This is an easy to drink bourbon which should appeal to those who enjoy a “softer”, relatively low proof whiskey, which also has some sweetness and fruit overtones. The port is not at all overdone, and provides a background of dark grape and warmth throughout. Angel’s Envy Bourbon would be great for those just starting out in bourbon, as well as for those who prefer a more soft and subdued pour. Have you tried Angel’s Envy Bourbon? What did you think?
