Background – Augusta Cask Strength Wheated Bourbon Review
Augusta Cask Strength Wheated Bourbon is part of the distillery’s recently expanded core portfolio, introduced alongside its Small Batch Cask Strength (Rye) Bourbon. (read my Augusta Small Batch Bourbon Review!)
This release marks Augusta Distillery’s first wheated bourbon, created by replacing rye with wheat in the mash bill to produce “a softer, rounder character while maintaining the structure that defines Augusta Distillery’s standards.” “Barrel selections emphasize sweetness, texture and integration, resulting in notes of stone fruit and a smooth, extended finish,” according to the press release.
Both new expressions are aged an average of seven years and are positioned as more “accessible” offerings within Augusta’s lineup. According to Master Distiller Alex Castle, the goal was to create bourbons that are not only enjoyable neat, but also versatile enough to hold up in classic cocktails such as an Old Fashioned or Boulevardier.
Augusta Cask Strength Wheated Bourbon is available online, at the distillery in Augusta, Kentucky, and within the brand’s 30-state distribution footprint.

Tasting Notes – Augusta Cask Strength Wheated Bourbon Review
Let’s taste it:
🛏 Rested: 15 minutes in a Glencairn
👉🏻 Nose: Moderately sweet; toffee, vanilla, sweet cherries, raspberry jam, honey, mild dry oak; tart orange citrus in the background; alcohol vapor appropriate to less than expected for the proof
👉🏻 Taste: Moderately syrupy sweet; toffee, tart orange citrus, raspberry jam, mild dry oak, mild tannins, caramel
👉🏻 Finish: Lingering tart orange citrus and raspberry jam; mild dry oak; rising and lasting white pepper spice; progressively dry; long with a deep warmth, lingering spice, jam and mild barrel char
Sweet, Confectionery, Fruity, and Layered with a Drying Finish
The nose of Augusta Cask Strength Wheated Bourbon is quite full, sweet and rich, with plenty of confectionery notes, as well as layers of stone fruit and citrus. After a few sips, the stone fruits change in character, with the sweet cherry notes shifting more toward raspberry jam.
Many of those flavors carry into the palate, which is initially moderately sweet before becoming progressively drier and spicier as it moves into the finish. The finish itself retains lingering fruit, but it has a drying character with white pepper spice and a touch of smoky barrel char. It lasts for quite a while.
A Wheated Bourbon That Checks All the Boxes
Augusta Cask Strength Wheated Bourbon feels like it was made for me, although I am pretty sure that is just a coincidence. It delivers exactly what I look for in a cask strength wheated bourbon – confectionery notes, fruit, sweetness, and spice, all well-integrated and layered. I couldn’t ask for more! If this sounds like your kind of bourbon, too, give it a try!
Having also reviewed Augusta’s Small Batch Bourbon, I can say both are excellent in their own right. However, if I had to choose just one, this would be it. It aligns perfectly with what I look for in a bourbon. Of course, it is a single barrel, so your results may vary.
Have you tried Augusta Cask Strength Wheated Bourbon? What did you think? Cheers!🥃
