The First Distillery Reserve Series Release of 2026

Bardstown Bourbon Company continues to push the boundaries of finishing and blending through its Distillery Reserve Series. The latest in the series, and the first of 2026, Bardstown Bourbon Company Cascadia Garryana Oak Barrel Finish Bourbon, is finished in barrels crafted from rare Oregon white oak. This release highlights the exceptionally scarce American hardwood known for imparting distinctive character unlike any other in American whiskey.

A Garryana Oak Finished Bourbon – Bardstown Bourbon Company Cascadia Garryana Oak Barrel Finish Bourbon Review

Bardstown Bourbon Company Cascadia Garryana Oak Barrel Finish Bourbon is built on a blend of 9 and 10 year old bourbons, each with a different mash bill of corn, rye, and malted barley. After blending, the bourbon was finished for 10 months in 10 custom Garryana oak barrels produced by Oregon Barrel Works. These barrels were given a three-hour toast and the whiskey was aged on the 6th floor of the warehouse over the summer, allowing for increased interaction with the wood.

Here is the bourbon blend composition:

  • 80%: Kentucky Bourbon – 10 Years Old – Mash Bill: 70% Corn, 18% Rye, 12% Malted Barley
  • 12%: Indiana Bourbon – 10 Years Old – Mash Bill: 75% Corn, 21% Rye, 4% Malted Barley
  • 8%: Kentucky Bourbon – 9 Years Old – Mash Bill: 74% Corn, 18% Rye, 8% Malted Barley

Tasting Notes – Bardstown Bourbon Company Cascadia Garryana Oak Barrel Finish Bourbon Review

Let’s taste it:

🛏 Rested: 15 minutes in a Glencairn glass

🎨 Color: Dark Amber

👉🏻 Nose: Demerara simple syrup, burnt caramel, tangy, dry wood, cloves; raspberry jam; slightly musty; alcohol appropriate for the proof
👉🏻 Taste: Moderate syrupy sweetness, caramel; rapidly drying; dry spicy wood, hints of jam, mild tobacco later on
👉🏻 Finish: Mild fading syrupy sweetness, rapidly becomes very dry; lasting white pepper spice, lingering pipe tobacco and char; long

From Syrupy Sweet to Spicy and Dry

The nose starts off with a syrupy sweetness and burnt caramel, along with a tanginess, cloves, and dry wood. After a sip or two, raspberry jam becomes more noticeable. There is a slight mustiness as well. The syrupy sweetness carries into the beginning of the palate, along with some caramel, but the mouthfeel quickly becomes dry. Dry, spicy wood develops along with hints of jam and some tobacco later on. It is quite striking how quickly this transitions from sweet to very dry on the palate.

Mild, fading syrupy sweetness carries into the beginning of the finish, which then becomes very dry. White pepper spice builds and lingers, along with pipe tobacco and char. In the end, there is a dry mouthfeel with subtle dry wood and char.

A Bold and Polarizing Oak Influence – Bardstown Bourbon Company Cascadia Garryana Oak Barrel Finish Bourbon Review

This is quite the complex pour. The Garryana oak has a strong influence on this whiskey. While the majority of the bourbon in this blend is a 10 year old Kentucky bourbon, the base bourbon itself is somewhat difficult to discern as the contribution from the finishing barrels is intense.

Like some other distinctive wood finishes, this Garryana Oak Barrel finished bourbon is likely to be quite polarizing. I suspect there will be people that really enjoy it, and those for whom it is not their proverbial “cup of tea.”

A Uniquely Complex Pour

As for me, I quite like it. It is different, and not necessarily something that I would want to drink every day. But, for an occasional pour that is unique and complex, this certainly fits the bill. If you want to try a bourbon with some unique characteristics, then you will want to give Cascadia a try. Have you had Bardstown Bourbon Company Cascadia Garryana Oak Barrel Finish Bourbon? What did you think? Cheers! 🥃
