Bardstown Bourbon Company’s Discovery Series highlights the art of blending. Since its inception, the various expressions have included blends of bourbons from different states, as well as other whiskeys — including ryes and even a Canadian corn whiskey. However, Discovery Series 13 is the first-ever double-barreled expression in the series.

According to the brand: Our Discovery series highlights the art of blending, combining exquisite whiskies so the sum is better than any part. Discovery 13 transforms luck into legend with a bold blend of Kentucky Bourbon perfected with Hungarian and American Oak. This limited release embraces the mystery of its number, offering a whiskey that’s rich, layered, and for the first time, double-barreled in the Discovery series for added depth and distinction.

The breakdown of the component bourbons in Discovery Series 13:

• 45% Kentucky – 9 years – Corn 74% | Rye 18% | Malted Barley 8%
• 22% Kentucky – 9 years – Corn 78% | Rye 10% | Malted Barley 12%
• 20% Kentucky – 15 years – Corn 75% | Rye 13% | Malted Barley 12%
• 13% Kentucky – 8 years – Corn 70% | Rye 21% | Malted Barley 9%

Finishing Barrels:

• 61 percent finished in new American White Oak
• 39 percent finished in Hungarian Oak

Finishing Length: 4 months

Finishing Location:

• Hungarian Oak: High Floor to promote extraction
• American Oak: Low Floor to ease into the final flavor profile

Tasting Notes – Bardstown Bourbon Company Discovery Series 13 Review

Let’s taste it:

🛏 Rested: 15 minutes in a Bardstown Bourbon Company Copita

👉🏻Nose: Mildly sweet, dry oak, brown sugar, dark stone fruit with a jammy character; touch of tart orange peels; light toffee later on; alcohol vapor a bit lighter than expected for the proof.
👉🏻Taste: Moderately sweet at first, with sweetness fading as time goes on; plenty of dry and spicy oak; brown sugar; dark stone fruits, touch of tart orange peels.
👉🏻Finish: Fairly dry with lingering mild sweetness; dark stone fruits and tart orange citrus; mild tannins, continuing oak, white pepper spice, with barrel char later on. Those flavors linger for quite some time, along with a pleasant, deep, warmth.

Mature Flavor Notes

The mature notes in Discovery Series 13 are noticeable from the first sniff and continue to the very end. The nose is a perfect mix of mature oak and dark fruit, with other rich flavors. Those notes continue into the palate, with the mouthfeel becoming drier, spicier, and capped by a bit of smoky char in the finish. It’s definitely a pour to savor.

A Bit of an Enigma

Nonetheless, the mature notes of this bourbon are a bit of an enigma. 80% of the blend is 8 or 9 years old — the majority being nine years — with only 20% being 15 years old. That relatively small percentage of older bourbon certainly contributes some of the more mature flavors. In addition, I’m assuming it’s also the finishing in the American and Hungarian oak barrels — probably more so the latter — that’s adding these characteristics to the bourbon. Regardless, the flavors all add up to a delicious pour.
