Bardstown Bourbon Company Discovery Series #4 Review

The Bardstown Bourbon Company Discovery Series #4 is an interesting bourbon. The caramel, vanilla and cherries in the nose changed considerably in the taste, with that being more of a well aged bourbon. The oak, char and dryness then dominate, and continue into the long, long finish.

I am a big fan of the Bardstown Bourbon Company! It’s a great place to visit, I love their restaurant, they have a great bar, and of course, they also have great bourbon! I will usually taste whatever their latest release is, but what I really love at the bar is their barrel aged cocktails. But…. that has nothing to do with this post, which is about the latest release in the Discovery Series, the Bardstown Bourbon Company Discovery Series #4, so I’ll move on….

The folks at the Bardstown Bourbon Company pride themselves on being transparent. The Discovery Series are all a blend of sourced bourbons. They would have to be since the age of the bourbons is much older than the age of the BBC! The distilleries from which these bourbons were obtained are never revealed, but the mash bills are. A little detective work might uncover the source…

Discovery Series #4 Mash Bills
  • 55% Kentucky 13 year – 74% corn, 18% rye, 8% malted barley
  • 37% Kentucky 15 year – 78.5% corn, 13% rye, 8.5% malted barley
  • 8% Kentucky 10 year – 75% corn, 13% rye, 12% malted barley

I can’t help but notice that the 78.5/13/8.5 15 year bourbon is the same age and unusual mash bill as the Old Soul 15 year that I have enjoyed so much. So I am assuming they both were sourced from the same distillery?

Tasting Notes

Let’s taste it:

🛌 Rested for 25 minutes in a Glencairn

👉Nose: Vanilla, caramel, rye spices, cherries, light cedar, mild alcohol
👉Taste: Oak, char, caramel, rye spices. Fairly dry. Maybe a touch of dark (90%+) chocolate?
👉Finish: The flavors continue into the long, long finish with a moderate burn. A hint of cedar and light fruit notes appear along the way, with some rye spices revealing themselves again at the very end.
