Bardstown Bourbon Company’s Collaborative Series, according to the company, “celebrates the art of finishing, working with respected producers of beer, wines, and spirits, by aging fine whiskey in their barrels to create truly unique products.” Therefore, the Collaborative Series features a variety of red wine finished whiskeys. In fact, some of these collaborative efforts have been so well-received that they’ve returned for encore performances!
Bardstown Bourbon Company’s red wine finished Collaborative Series whiskeys include: The Prisoner, Carter Cellars and Phifer Pavitt. And now the time has come for the latest in this genre: Bardstown Bourbon Company Silver Oak.

The Details
Bardstown Bourbon Company Silver Oak is blend of six 9- to 15-year-old bourbons from Kentucky, Tennessee, Indiana and Georgia. The mature bourbons were finished in Silver Oak Cabernet barrels for 17 months.
To Be Completely Honest….
I must preface this review by saying that while I have tried many red wine finished bourbons over the years, I am generally not their biggest fan. Nonetheless, I think I understand the characteristics that please those who enjoy the style, and I feel that I know the traits to look for. Therefore, I hopefully can provide a worthwhile review.
Tasting Notes – Bardstown Bourbon Company Silver Oak Bourbon Review (Collaborative Series)
Let’s taste it:
🛏 Rested for 15 minutes in a Glencairn Glass
👉🏻Nose: Dark stone fruits like plums and raspberries; dark berry jam; Cabernet Sauvignon overtones; hints of lightly roasted nuts; brown sugar & light caramel; mild oak; alcohol appropriate for proof
👉🏻Taste: Cabernet notes; dark plums, light sweet caramel, light honey, grape jam, tannins, dry oak
👉🏻Finish: Fairly long, with growing capsaicin spice; tannins, mild oak and char; subtle lingering Cabernet; pleasant warmth.
Cabernet Sauvignon, Through and Through
From the beginning, there are the overtones of a full bodied Cabernet Sauvignon, bringing flavors of stone fruits such as plums and raspberries, as well as dark berry jam. Brown sugar, light caramel, mild oak and a hint of lightly roasted nuts round out the nose. The taste is a combination of Cabernet notes with dark plums, grape jam, light sweet caramel, light honey and tannins, joined by dry oak later on. The fairly long finish has noticeable capsaicin spice, as well as some tannins, mild oak, char and lingering Cabernet, ultimately culminating in a pleasant warmth.
A Whiskey For Red Wine Lovers
Bardstown Bourbon Company Silver Oak Collaborative Series is a full bodied red wine lover’s bourbon. Seventeen months is quite a bit of time in a red wine barrel, and the wine notes are dominant throughout. However, they do become somewhat less evident as the sip goes on. Nonetheless, the flavors of the well-aged bourbons themselves are a bit difficult to discern. Certainly, that is in part due to the bourbon flavors blending well with the wine, although I feel that red wine can at times overshadow those flavors a bit, as well.
Conclusion – Bardstown Bourbon Company Silver Oak Bourbon Review
Anyone who has followed me for a while knows that while I love a full-bodied red wine, I generally prefer to enjoy it separately from my bourbon. However, I know that many people are fans of this bourbon-red wine combination and Bardstown Bourbon Company’s prior red wine barrel finished Collaborative Series whiskeys have all been very popular. Therefore, I am assuming that the Silver Oak will be, as well, and I think this whiskey is a great representation of the style. So, if you are a fan of red wine finished whiskeys, and have enjoyed Bardstown’s prior releases, I think you’ll really like their new Silver Oak Collaborative Series Bourbon, too!
Are you a red wine finished bourbon fan? I would love to know! Cheers!🥃
