The Latest Addition To The Basil Hayden Line
The latest addition to the ever expanding Basil Hayden line is Malted Rye. It is a permanent expression, and is joining Basil Hayden Toast “as a super-premium addition to the portfolio”, according the press release. It goes on to say that Beam uses “a distinct malting process that transforms the rye grain to create a more subtle, mellow spice with delicate sweet and floral notes.”
The Basil Hayden Malted Rye mash bill consists of 100% malted rye. For those not familiar with malted rye, it has a distinct flavor profile, with subdued rye spices and often a bit of fruit, similar to other malted grains. It is generally quite different than the more commonly used unmalted rye.
Tasting Notes – Basil Hayden Malted Rye Review
Let’s taste it:
🛏 Rested for 10-15 minutes in a Glencairn
👉🏻Nose: Relatively mild rye spices; peaches & pears; tart orange peel; simple syrup; light oak later on; mild alcohol
👉🏻Taste: Fairly light with black tea, mild simple syrup sweetness, light tart citrus and rye spices; subtle peaches which become more evident later
👉🏻Finish: Rye spices and white pepper grow, with a surprising degree of spice heat later on in the middle of my tongue; moderately long, but rapidly fading, with some dryness and tannins later on
Starts Out Sweet With Fruit, Finished With Spice & Tannins
The nose initially starts out fairly sweet with peaches and pears, but as time goes on, orange peel becomes more dominant. Rye spices are there, but are on the mild side, as would be expected in a malted rye. After a few sips, some thin oak appears as well. Black tea, orange peel, some rye spices and mild simple syrup sweetness dominate the taste. The finish brings a fairly short burst of white pepper spice, with some dryness and tannins later on in the finish.
Basil Hayden Whiskeys Tend To Have Lighter Flavors
Basil Hayden whiskeys are not known for their strong flavor profiles, and Basil Hayden Malted Rye is no different. Likewise, the body is a bit thin, as would be expected for the proof. However, some of this is compensated for by the fuller flavor that malted rye provides. Nevertheless, the overall flavor profile is pleasant, and the lower alcohol content makes this a nice whiskey for those who prefer a somewhat softer, lower proof pour.
Will Basil Hayden Malted Rye rival a barrel strength 95/5 rye, or even a high proof malted rye for those who enjoy a ramped up flavor profile and lots of octane? Of course not. That would never be expected from a Basil Hayden whiskey. Would it be a nice rye for someone who is not a high proof or “in your face” rye fan, or for someone early on in their whiskey journey? How about for when one is in the mood for a lighter, lower proof pour that still has some flavor? Absolutely. And those people are who this malted rye is made for.
