Bourbon Reviews, Distillery News and Information
Kentucky Straight Bourbon Whiskey
71% Yellow Corn, 21% Wheat, 4% Malted Barley
Bluegrass Distillers is located in the historic Northside neighborhood of Lexington, KY. They are housed in the Bread Box (the former home of Rainbo Bread Factory) at the corner of Jefferson and West Sixth Street. While West Sixth Brewing occupies a majority of the 90,000 square foot space, Bluegrass Distillers can be found around the southeast corner. They were established in 2012 with their first bourbon sold at the end of 2015. Now that they have been around for a while, they have started releasing some older bourbons. This Bluegrass Distillers Bottled-In-Bond Wheated Bourbon was just released earlier this month.
Bluegrass Distillers released their first Bottled-in-Bond bourbon at the beginning of last summer. That one was made from their rye bourbon mash bill. The current release is made from their wheated bourbon mash bill.
Let’s taste it:
🛌 Rested for 15 minutes in a Glencairn
👉Nose: Sweet corn, raisins, Fig Newtons, brown sugar, burnt caramel, sweet stone fruits, light oak & a hint of maple syrup; light alcohol
👉Taste: Fig Newtons, sweet corn, raisins, burnt caramel & simple syrup sweetness; moderately full mouthfeel
👉Finish: Sweetness and other flavors continue, with char and oak rapidly building. The other flavors fade, but are still present. Mild to moderate alcohol burn
What a Difference!
What a difference a little time makes! I have been buying Bluegrass Distillers bourbon since their early releases. I happen to have a bottle of the wheated bourbon which I had purchased March 2020 to support the Lexington Humane Society. It’s the same mash bill, but closer to 2 years old and 90 proof vs 4 years old and 100 proof for this BiB one. There’s quite a difference in these, though! The flavors I am enjoying so much now are much more developed, and they are probably more robust due to the increased proof as well. The tannins are decreased.
Exciting Times Ahead
It’s exciting times for Bluegrass Distillers as they will be soon moving to a much larger facility in Midway, KY. I look forward to visiting them there, although it won’t be quite as convenient as it is now.??♂️ Check out our write up about Bluegrass Distillers on BourbonObsessed.com or our short Bluegrass Distillers tour video.
