Bottle - Redwood Empire Devils Tower Bourbon Review
Redwood Empire Small Lot Series

Two weeks ago, I mentioned that Redwood Empire had announced their Small Lot Series. I have since had the opportunity to try both of the inaugural whiskeys, Devils Tower Bourbon and Foggy Burl Single Malt Whiskey. I enjoyed them both, and have posted a review about one of them, with the other review on the way.

Lisa Wicker Named Master Distiller of Garrard County Distilling Co.

In our newsletter back on January 19th we had mentioned that Garrard County Distilling had recently begun production at their new large facility in Lancaster, KY. Their current brand is All Nations Whiskey. At that time, Staghorn, the company which owns the distillery, had not announced their master distiller. Well, the wait is now over. This week, they announced that Lisa Wicker would be in that role. You may recognize her name as the former President and Master Distiller of Widow Jane Distillery. Her current focus will be on selecting and blending whiskey from Garrard County Distilling’s more than 17,000 sourced-barrel inventory for the All Nations brand. Several new brands will be announced this year.

Those wacky folks at Bourbon and Banter are at it again…

Taylor Swift to Launch Exclusive Whiskey Collection – NOT!

Well, the folks at Bourbon and Banter had everyone going once again this week with their “inside scoop” about a new whiskey collection from Taylor Swift. As their story goes, the collection was created under the mentorship of Peggy Noe Stevens, and featured collaborations with 4 well known female distillers & blenders.

Bourbon & Banter gave brief descriptions of the whiskeys, each named after the Taylor Swift album which inspired them. Readers were also told that each bottle came with a “Barrel Proof” NFT which unlocked some digital bonuses. In this wacky time of celebrity whiskeys and digital gimmicks, it seemed feasible enough. Nonetheless, I was still skeptical. Alas, it turned out that Bourbon & Banter had fabricated the story. That’s something they have done a few times before in their “Parody” section. Nonetheless, they did put quite a bit of effort into the article, and it’s an amusing read if you have a few minutes. I wonder how many stores are already getting phone calls from people looking for bottles….

Heaven’s Door Announces “The Exploration Series”

According to the distillery: “Heaven’s Door Spirits proudly announces The Exploration Series. This latest collection of limited expressions continues to redefine premium craft whiskey. Led by Master Distiller Ken Pierce and Master Blender Alex Moore, Heaven’s Door persistently strives to innovate with new finishing methods for a unique collection of limited-time offerings, enriching the whiskey experience.”

There will be two releases in The Exploration Series each year. The inaugural release consists of a blend of Heaven’s Door’s Tennessee Straight Bourbon Whiskey finished in freshly dumped Calvados casks and complemented by the addition of medium-heavy toasted French oak staves. The inaugural expression of The Exploration Series is aged for at least 5 years, bottled at 108 proof, and available for $79.99 at and select retailers across the country.

I’m a fan of Calvados, and have enjoyed the few Calvados finished whiskeys that I have tried. Therefore, this whiskey sounds very interesting to me, and I am looking forward to giving it a try!

Holland America Line Introduces Buffalo Trace Single Barrel Selection

Starting in March 2024, Holland American Line will feature a specially selected Buffalo Trace Single Barrel Bourbon in the Ocean Bar on each Holland America ship. This single barrel was selected by Holland America team members under the guidance of Sazarac’s (the parent company of Buffalo Trace) Master Blender Drew Mayville and Kentucky Bourbon Hall of Fame inductee Freddie Johnson.

The group ultimately selected a barrel that was filled on Dec. 21, 2015, and was aged in Warehouse U on Floor 5, Rick 34. The bourbon is said to have the distinct characteristics of Buffalo Trace Bourbon, with more intense notes of oak and spice on the nose with a smooth, lingering finish. It will be available neat, on the rocks or in an Old Fashioned. I have never been on a cruise, so I don’t know what is generally offered. However, whatever the line up, this seems like a very nice addition to it.
