Distillery & Bourbon News For August 9, 2024
- RD1 Spirits has created a new role of Research & Development Master Distiller. RD1 Spirits has named Jarrad Gollihue, PhD as their new R&D Master Distiller. overseeing RD1’s wood-finishing operations and experiments with new woods at RD1 Distillery at The Commons, slated to open in January 2025. RD1’s Kentucky Straight Bourbon will continue to be crafted by Master Distiller Jacob Call at Western Kentucky Distilling in Beaver Dam, Ky. Read the press release for more details.
- If you have been thinking that you needed a little something extra from Fireball to spice up a wedding, you’re in luck! Earlier this year, there was Fireball Lipstick, then there were Fireball Hats in time for the Derby. Now, there’s a Fireball Garter that will fill a much needed gap. Complete with a pocket to hold a 50ml shooter of Fireball, it’s just what every bride and/or groom needs! Read the press release here.
- Four Roses announced this year’s 2024 Limited Edition Small Batch. I haven’t had the privilege of trying it, but it is said by the distillery to be “sweeter on the nose, with aromas of creamy vanilla, honey and brown sugar that open the palate to a decadent mouthfeel finished with our signature mellow spice to warm the senses.” It is a blend of 12 yr OBSV, 15 yr OESK, 16 yr OESF & 20 yr OBSV, bottled at 108.2 proof, with an MSRP of $220. Interestingly, Four Roses has gone back to their pre-pandemic way of handling this release. This year it will once again be sold at the distillery and bottling facility, and the on-line lottery is no more. The day they have selected for the release is the Saturday of the Kentucky Bourbon Festival, September 14, with doors opening at 9AM, and the sale continuing while supplies last. I’m a big fan of the LE and am very happy to see the demise of the lottery and a return to the old ways. However, this is sure to add even more chaos to an already very busy KBF weekend. - Woodford Reserve had a surprise release of their latest Distillery Series, called Woodford Reserve Distillery Series Blended Malt. According to the brand: “This new expression combines two malt whiskies. The first was 100 percent malt aged in used barrels, then finished in a Ruby Port Barrel. The other was a blend of five different styles of malt grains aged in new oak barrels.” Bottles were/are available at the distillery (I do not know if it has sold out), but it is currently available online (KY, NH, ND, NE, and D.C.only) and in select Kentucky retailers. Unfortunately, Woodford has gradually increased the price of these 375ml Distillery Series over the years, and I think it has adversely affected people’s interest in them, even the coveted Double Double Oaked. 90.4 proof. $64.99/375ml.
