Bourbon Rabbi Honey Finished Bourbon Review

Have you heard of the Bourbon Rabbi? He is Rabbi Chaim Litvin, and also a brand of bourbon. The nickname Bourbon Rabbi was bestowed upon him by the Wall Street Journal in 2017 because he works with distilleries to certify their bourbon as kosher. He also just recently released a bourbon of the same name.

What is this “Bourbon Rabbi” Anyway?

Have you heard of the Bourbon Rabbi? He is Rabbi Chaim Litvin, and also a brand of bourbon. The nickname Bourbon Rabbi was bestowed upon him by the Wall Street Journal in 2017 because Rabbi Litvin works with distilleries to certify their bourbon as kosher. Now, you may be thinking that all bourbon is kosher. Interestingly, in its pure form, that is true; however issues arise when bourbon is processed in plants that make products that may not be kosher, or if it is transported in trucks or other vessels that have held non-kosher goods. That is where the Bourbon Rabbi comes in.

The Bourbon Rabbi Bourbon

Last year, the Bourbon Rabbi also debuted an eponymous bourbon. The bottle I am currently reviewing is a special release single barrel, however, sourced from a Kentucky distillery and then finished for 2 months in a previously used Bourbon Rabbi bourbon barrel which then held honey for 1 month, prior to being refilled with this bourbon.

Tasting Notes

Let’s taste it:

🛌 Rested for 15 minutes in a Glencairn

👉Nose: Light honey, dry apple cider, hint of cinnamon, light anise, rye spices & cedar; notes of juicy fruit gum & cherry candy towards the back; relatively mild alcohol
👉Taste: Honey, caramel, cinnamon, cherry candy & barrel char
👉Finish: Light sweetness and fruit linger. Barrel char and black pepper spice build and linger into the fairly long finish. Moderate burn.

Summary

This bourbon offers a nice contrast of sweeter and fruitier flavors up front that become spicier in the finish. The youthful flavors of the bourbon are evident, but they are mellowed by the honey barrels. What is also mellowed is the alcohol. This bourbon carries that 100 proof quite well. In addition, the honey flavor itself is fairly subtle and not at all overdone.
