Oaklore Four Grain Bourbon Review

Oaklore Four Grain Bourbon Review

Oaklore Four Grain Bourbon is a small batch bourbon produced at sister distilleries in Kentucky and North Carolina. The bourbon blends 5–6-year-old wheated and rye bourbon barrels, which are re-barreled for secondary aging in North Carolina’s Piedmont region. The result is a balanced and approachable 92-proof bourbon with layered notes of fruit, spice, oak and tannins that deepen with time. Oaklore Four Grain Bourbon is a great option for those who enjoy complexity at a lower proof. Read our review to learn all about it!

Old Fitzgerald Bottled-In-Bond Spring 2025 9 Year-Old Bourbon Review - Bottle photo credit: Heaven Hill Distillery

The Old Fitzgerald Bottled-In-Bond Spring 2025 9-Year-Old Bourbon is the 15th release in Heaven Hill’s elegant decanter series. Featuring a balanced profile with classic bourbon flavors including dark cherries, light caramel, tart citrus, dry oak, and some spice in the finish, this release has a slightly lighter body than many of the prior releases. Nevertheless, it is quite an enjoyable pour.

Ship’s Bell Blended Bourbon Review

Veritable Ship's Bell Blended Bourbon Review

Ship’s Bell Blended Bourbon Whiskey from Veritable Distillery in Connecticut blends a 3-year-old Kentucky bourbon with Veritable’s own American Single Malt, resulting in a fruit-forward whiskey with evolving flavors and a surprising amount of depth for its 86 proof. With notes of peaches, tart orange, caramel, and lingering spice, this thoughtfully crafted blend stands out for its full flavors at a very approachable proof. If you’re curious about how this young distillery is making a mark with their first bourbon release, be sure to check out our full review.

Larrikin Rosewater Bourbon is a 86-proof blend of 5- and 6-year-old Kentucky straight bourbons, proofed down with house-brewed rosewater tea and priced at $70. While its rosewater component may sound unconventional, the result is a well-integrated bourbon with a soft, floral character and an overall balanced, pleasant flavor profile. It’s a unique and enjoyable pour, well suited to warmer weather.

Kentucky Wildcask Bourbon Review

Kentucky Wildcask Bourbon review - The first bourbon from the University of Kentucky James B. Beam Institute for Kentucky Spirits (JBBI) Distillery

Kentucky Wildcask Bourbon is the inaugural release from the University of Kentucky’s James B. Beam Institute for Kentucky Spirits. Crafted as part of the Commercialization of Distilled Spirits Course, this limited-edition, non-chill filtered bourbon blends three Kentucky bourbons aged 4.5 to 8 years. Bottled at 100 proof, it offers evolving flavors of cherry, cinnamon, orange peel, and white pepper with a long, warming finish — a strong first effort from the next generation of bourbon makers.

McLaughlin 3799 Bourbon Review

McLaughlin 3799 Bourbon Review

McLaughlin 3799 Bourbon is distilled, aged and hand-bottled at McLaughlin Distillery in Sewickley, Pennsylvania. It is crafted from a mash bill of 100% corn, and aged a minimum of 5 years in 10 gallon barrels. While the dry spicy oak from the barrel is definitely evident, it is not overpowering and is well balanced with the bourbon’s sweeter flavors. If you enjoy a well-made small batch craft bourbon with noticeable, but not overpowering dry spicy oak, then you’ll want to give this bourbon a try.

Old Elk Slow Cut Blended Straight Bourbon Whiskey Review

Old Elk Slow Cut Blended Straight Bourbon Review

Old Elk’s Slow Cut Blended Straight Bourbon Whiskey represents the evolution of Old Elk’s original Straight Bourbon. This bourbon features a high malt mash bill, and is contract distilled at MGP. After maturation, Old Elk’s unique “Slow Cut” process gradually proofs the whiskey down over extended time to preserve flavor. It’s bottled at 88 proof and priced around $40, and is a very enjoyable pour. Both the proof and price point make this a great buy.
