Brother’s Bond History

The Brother’s Bond brand was created by Ian Somerhalder and Paul Wesley, stars of the CW series, The Vampire Diaries. For those not familiar with the show, or with its spin-off, The Originals, Ian and Paul, who were both brothers and vampires on the series, also drank their share of bourbon on the shows. And, as it turns out, they are also bourbon fans in real life. So, it only makes sense, that they got together to start a whiskey company. Their initial release was Brother’s Bond Bourbon, followed by a limited release of Brother’s Bond Cask Strength Bourbon, which would become a permanent addition to the line the following year. The newest release (May 2023) is Brother’s Bond Rye, the subject of this review.

Brother’s Bond Rye – The Specifics

Brother’s Bond Rye is made from 4 distinct mash bills, resulting in a final mash bill of 77% rye and 16% corn, with the remaining 7% being wheat and malted barley. The company website elaborates further on the blend, saying: “this rye recipe combines our signature bourbon blended with a distinctive straight rye mash bill”. Since Brother’s Bond Bourbon is a four grain bourbon made from a blend of 3 different mash bills, the fourth mash bill is provided by the addition of the straight rye whiskey. Brother’s Bond Rye is distilled in Indiana and is aged at least 4 years.

Tasting Notes – Brother’s Bond Rye Review

Let’s taste it:

🛏 Rested for 15 minutes in a Glencairn Glass

👉🏻Nose: Floral and citrusy; brown sugar; rye spices like cloves; touch of anise, tart orange and lemon peel, and some freshly squeezed juice as well; spearmint; alcohol vapor is appropriate for the proof
👉🏻Taste: Similar flavors to the nose, with plenty of citrus, brown sugar, rye spices and light caramel; mild sweetness; mild dry oak; growing black pepper spice
👉🏻Finish: Black pepper grows. Fairly dry, with subtle dry oak, mild char and hints of orange peel; reasonably long, with warmth lingering in the center of my tongue

The nose starts off floral and citrusy, with moderate brown sugar sweetness. There are plenty of rye spices, including cloves; a bit of anise and spearmint, too. The taste has similar notes, with brown sugar sweetness and light caramel, but also a developing dryness with light oak and tannins later on, and continuing into the finish. Black pepper grows into the dry finish and lingers for quite a while, along with dry oak and orange peel. Warmth and spice remain on my tongue, without much of a burn in my chest.

Conclusion

Brother’s Bond Rye is one of those ryes that has bright crisp flavors up front, with plenty of citrus, as well as floral notes. Those are the types of flavors that divulge the rye’s relative youth. Rye spices are certainly there, and combine very nicely with those brighter notes. The taste remains similar in character to the nose, however, the dryness that develops in the finish is a bit unexpected. Nonetheless, it serves as a nice palate cleanser before the next sip.

Brother’s Bond Rye will likely be enjoyed by those that are fans of somewhat youthful, brightly flavored ryes. I am a fan of that style, and l do like this rye quite a bit. Have you tried Brother’s Bond Rye? What did you think? Cheers!🥃
