Buzzard’s Roost Signature Double Oak Bourbon Review
Buzzard's Roost Signature Double Oak Bourbon develops in an unexpected way, with flavors that start off quite subtle and gradually become richer and more pronounced. Made from a 75% corn, 21% rye, and 4% malted barley mash bill, and finished in custom toasted and lightly charred barrels, this 100-proof bourbon highlights the brand's unique approach to secondary maturation. With a $45 price point and a flavor profile that evolves in the glass, it's a solid addition to the Buzzard's Roost lineup.

About Buzzard’s Roost
Buzzard’s Roost is an independent distiller, blender and bottler of whiskeys, based in Louisville, KY. Jason Brauner (of Louisville’s Bourbon’s Bistro) and Judith Hollis Jones developed the brand back in 2019. Buzzard’s Roost whiskeys are “created using a break-through approach to secondary maturation including 18-month-seasoned oak barrels for intensified flavors, and a low-char / high-toast designed to coax complex flavors from each barrel, leading to bourbon and rye whiskeys that taste like no other”, according to the brand. Buzzard’s Roost Signature Double Oak Bourbon is the latest addition to their portfolio, and is priced to appeal to all whiskey lovers.
The Specifics

Tasting Notes – Buzzard’s Roost Signature Double Oak Bourbon Review
Let’s taste it:
🛏 Rested for 15 minutes in a Glencairn
👉🏻Nose: Fairly light at first, with the aromas becoming much more full later on; caramel and toffee; dark cherries; spicy dry oak; hints of gingerbread cookies; alcohol vapor on the lighter side for the proof
👉🏻Taste: Mildly sweet; honey, brown sugar, caramel, mild rye spices & tangy tart orange
👉🏻Finish: Growing and lingering white pepper spice; increasingly dry; mild tannins; dry spicy wood, lingering tart orange peel; subtle honey and brown sugar; fairly long, pleasant warmth.
The nose of Buzzard’s Roost Signature Double Oak Bourbon is initially fairly subtle with spicy dry oak and hints of toffee and caramel, and dark cherries in the background. As time goes on, the flavors in the nose become much more pronounced and full, no longer being subtle at all. Later on there is a hint of gingerbread cookies. The alcohol vapor is fairly light for the proof.
The taste is similar to the nose, in that it is fairly mild at first, but more full after a sip or two. There is a mild sweetness from honey and brown sugar, as well as caramel, relatively mild rye spices and tangy tart orange peel. The finish brings growing and lingering white pepper spice, and is increasingly dry with mild tannins. However, the tart orange peel, honey and brown sugar linger, as well. In addition, spicy dry wood becomes increasingly noticeable towards the end. Interestingly, dark cherries are present at the end, as well. The finish is fairly long, and I am left with a pleasant warmth.
Conclusion
Buzzard’s Roost Signature Double Oak Bourbon has quite an interesting progression of flavors, although why that occurs is something of a quandary. The nose is fairly subtle at first, but it soon blossoms, and its flavors become much more noticeable and full. There is a similar transition in the taste. However, once the flavors develop, this bourbon is quite complex and enjoyable. I’ve never quite had a bourbon’s flavors evolve like that. Have you? Cheers!🥃
