From the CALI Distillery website: “DoubleWood is our high rye bourbon shaped by exposure to two very different varieties of oak. CALI Mavericks DoubleWood Whiskey starts out in charred new American Oak barrels, and finishes with toasted French Oak.”

Tasting Notes

Let’s taste it:

🛌 Rested for 15 minutes in a Glencairn

👉Nose: Rye spices, caramel, dark fruits such as black cherries & plums, but also some sweet fruit flavors as in juicy fruit gum; anise, hint of leather, oak and brown sugar; very light alcohol
👉Taste: Caramel, lightly sweetened black tea, oak; medium body
👉Finish: Oak remains, and sweetness builds into the finish which then gradually turns drier with some char. The finish is longer than I had expected. Very mild burn.

Summary

CALI Mavericks DoubleWood Whiskey is a very interesting whiskey which is quite enjoyable and easy to drink. My bottle has been open for a week. During that short time many more and fuller flavors which were not present when the bottle was first opened have developed.

The fruitiness in the nose, blends very nicely with the rye and other spices. The fruitiness wanes in the taste and finish, with the whiskey taking on more traditional flavors. Although you might expect similarities to some of the other whiskeys finished in a second barrel, such as those by Woodford or the Michter’s, this one is a bit different, but tasty in its own right.
