About Casey Jones Distillery

Casey Jones Distillery was founded in 2014 by Master Distiller Arlon “AJ” Jones’ and his wife, Peg. The distillery’s name is in honor of AJ’s grandfather, Alfred “Casey” Jones. As it turns out, Casey Jones was famous for building high quality square or “coffin” stills back during Prohibition. Today, AJ carries on that moonshiner era tradition by making a corn and cane moonshine, in both unaged and barrel aged versions, as well as bourbons and a rye.

The Specifics – Casey Jones Founder’s 10th Anniversary Blend Review

Casey Jones Founder’s 10th Anniversary Blend is a unique blend that pays homage to Casey Jones’ moonshining roots. It is comprised of 75% Barrel Cut, a barrel aged spirit distilled from a 50/50 corn and cane mash bill (essentially barrel-aged moonshine), and 25% high corn bourbon whiskey. The bourbon mash bill boasts a 96% corn, 3% rye, and 1% malted barley composition. Notably, all component spirits are aged for five years. This combination results in a one-of-a-kind blend that celebrates Casey Jones’ legacy.

Tasting Notes – Casey Jones Founder’s 10th Anniversary Blend Review

Let’s taste it:

🛏 Rested for 15 minutes in a Glencairn

👉🏻Nose: Fairly sweet; butterscotch; burnt caramel; sweet brown sugar; raspberry jam; hint of tart orange; dry oak; alcohol vapor appropriate for the proof
👉🏻Taste: Dark caramel, syrupy brown sugar, raspberry jam, dry spicy oak; increasingly dry; tannins; white pepper spice
👉🏻Finish: White pepper spice; dry wood, tannins; long; moderate warmth

The nose of Casey Jones Founder’s 10th Anniversary Blend is quite rich. There’s sweet butterscotch, a bit of burnt caramel, sweet brown sugar and raspberry jam. In addition, a nice contrast comes from a hint of tart orange and dry oak. The alcohol vapor is appropriate for the proof.

Similar flavors continue into the taste, with dark caramel and sweet brown sugar simple syrup. However, soon after, there is increasing dryness, with dry spicy oak and some tannins, and growing white pepper spice, later on. The white pepper becomes fairly pronounced in the finish, which remains fairly dry, with dry wood and some tannins. The finish is long, with lingering spice, leaving me with a pleasant, deep down, warmth.

Rich Flavors Up Front

Casey Jones Founder’s 10th Anniversary Blend’s progression of flavors from quite rich and sweet in the nose, to more spicy and dry in the finish, makes for a complex and enjoyable pour. Initially, I was a little surprised at the degree of dry oak, which seemed a bit more to me than in prior Casey Jones releases. However, as 5 year old spirits make up Founder’s 10th Anniversary Blend, any or all of these may have been aged in smaller, 25 gallon, barrels. Therefore, the use of smaller barrels could easily explain a bit more dry oak than I had anticipated. Either way, it all adds up to a very tasty pour.

Conclusion

Casey Jones Founder’s 10th Anniversary Blend is a unique whiskey. One does not often see a spirit distilled from corn and cane sugar, blended with a bourbon. Nonetheless, it all adds up to a whiskey worthy of a 10th anniversary celebration! Have you tried any of Casey Jones’ whiskeys? What did you think? Cheers!🥃
