Background
Founded in 1856, Chicken Cock is one of America’s oldest whiskey brands. For Old Glory, they have partnered with Laird & Company, America’s oldest family-owned distillery (founded in 1780), to create a limited-release whiskey commemorating America’s 250th anniversary.
Old Glory combines 70% Chicken Cock Kentucky Straight Rye Whiskey with 30% Laird’s Apple Brandy, with both components aged a minimum of four years. According to the companies, this is the first collaboration between the two historic brands. Bottled at 100 proof and limited to 12,000 bottles, Old Glory brings together rye whiskey and apple brandy in a way that is a bit different from the usual finished whiskey release.

Tasting Notes – Chicken Cock Old Glory Kentucky Straight Rye Whiskey Blended With Laird’s Apple Brandy Review
Let’s taste it:
🛏 Rested: 15 minutes in a Glencairn glass
👉🏻 Nose: Sweet apple cider, honey, sweet caramel, rye spices – mainly cloves, tart limes; alcohol vapor appropriate for the proof.
👉🏻 Taste: Mildly sweet, light caramel, fresh apples, rye spices, hints of hot cinnamon.
👉🏻 Finish: Increasingly dry, subtle lingering apples, growing black pepper and hot cinnamon spice; mild char and dry wood; fairly long.
Sweet Apples And Honey Up Front With A Dry And Spicy Finish
Chicken Cock Old Glory has an interesting, and a bit surprising, evolution of flavors. The Laird’s Apple Brandy seems to dominate the nose, although the spices and citrus from the rye play a part as well. In addition, there is a pleasant light caramel and honey sweetness that may be coming from either component. However, as the sip progresses, the apple notes and sweetness diminish, with the finish becoming drier and spicier than I would have anticipated from the nose.
Interestingly, there are not all that many reviews of Chicken Cock Old Glory out there. I was wondering what others were experiencing in the finish, but I guess I will have to wonder some more. Those that mention the finish allude to some of the flavors that I mention, but not to the dry character. I am assuming the notes that I am getting in the end are a combination of the spices from the rye and the more mature notes from the aged spirits becoming more dominant during this phase of the sip.
One other issue is probably at play; I tasted this whiskey on three separate days. On first opening the bottle, I did not notice the dryness in the finish, whereas it was present on subsequent days. So, if other reviews were on freshly opened bottles, that could explain those reviewers’ different experiences as well.
Chicken Cock Old Glory Delivers a Surprising Evolution of Flavors
Overall, I am finding Chicken Cock Old Glory to be an enjoyable, yet a bit surprising, pour. The progression of contrasting flavors is definitely not what I initially expected.
