An Encore Performance

Chicken Cock Ryeteous Blonde was first released in 2020, but, thanks to popular demand, it has returned for an encore performance! It is made by taking Chicken Cock’s mature rye, and finishing it in barrels which had previously been used to age Goodwood’s blonde ale. Ryeteous Blonde is not age-stated, but we are told that it is aged a minimum of 4 years, although the length of finishing time in the blonde ale barrels is not provided. Nonetheless, since the base spirit is Chicken Cock’s core rye, it is made from a mash bill of 95% rye and 5% malted barley, and is aged in char 3, medium+ toasted barrels.

Tasting Notes – Chicken Cock Ryeteous Blonde Review

Let’s taste it:

🛏 Rested for 15 minutes in a Glencairn

👉🏻Nose: Full, moderately sweet, beer-like maltiness, honey, simple syrup, rye spices (like cloves), mild tart limes, hint of licorice; subtle dry oak; alcohol vapor appropriate for the proof
👉🏻Taste: Mildly sweet beer maltiness, cloves, growing white pepper spice, tart lime
👉🏻Finish: White pepper spice, tart lime, lingering sweetness, progressively dry; mild dry wood; long, pleasant warmth

The nose of Chicken Cock Ryeteous Blonde is full-bodied, with a moderately sweet beer-like maltiness. Honey and simple syrup chime in, and combine nicely with a moderate degree of rye spices, with cloves standing out. Tart lime citrus adds a nice tang, and there’s a hint of licorice and subtle dry oak, too. The alcohol vapor is appropriate for the proof.

The taste has a mild sweet maltiness from the beer, with increasing white pepper spice. In addition, tart lime sits squarely in the back of my mouth. The white pepper and lime continue into the finish where there is mild lingering sweetness. However, there is an increasingly dry mouthfeel, with mild dry wood towards the end. The finish is long with a pleasant warmth.

Summary – Chicken Cock Ryeteous Blonde Review

Chicken Cock Ryeteous Blonde has a very enjoyable complexity. The sweet maltiness contributed by the blonde ale provides a nice compliment to the tart lime citrus and rye spices from the rye. The beer contribution is most noticeable in the nose and taste, with the finish being much more dry. However, that dryness prepares me nicely for my next sip.

At 100 proof, this rye would be a very enjoyable sipper at any time. Nonetheless, Chicken Cock has released it just in time for what they are calling “Ryeteous Summer”, saying that “Ryeteous Blonde is the ideal companion for those who live for adventurous summer moments.” And what would be a more adventurous summer moment than to relax on a hot summer day with a nice pour of rye whiskey? I don’t think that is what they were referring to, but to each their own!🤣 Cheers!🥃
