Copper & Cask

Copper & Cask is an independent bottler that specializes in single barrel expressions. However, they also produce limited edition small batch whiskeys, such as this Double Oak Bourbon.

The Specifics

Copper & Cask Double Oak Bourbon is part of the brand’s Small Batch Series. This bourbon is from Batch 009, which is a marriage of 20 bourbon barrels, all aged at least 8 years. All of the bourbon was distilled at MGP (now Ross & Squibb) in Lawrenceburg, Indiana, then aged in Kentucky. The barrels are a mix of MGP’s 21% rye mash bill (75% corn, 21% Rye, 4% Malted Barley) and their 36% high-rye mash bill (60% corn, 36% Rye, 4% Malted Barley). The whiskey was batched and then re-barreled into a combination of new and used charred barrels for finishing. It is bottled at cask strength and is non-chill filtered. Only 3,600 bottles were produced.

Tasting Notes – Copper & Cask Double Oak Bourbon Review

Let’s taste it:

🛏 Rested for 15 minutes in a Glencairn Glass

👉🏻Nose: Juicy fruit gum, cherries, light toffee, mild dry oak, touch of cinnamon, hint of mesquite smoke and tangy barbecue sauce; alcohol vapor noticeable, but appropriate for the proof
👉🏻Taste: Cherries and Juicy Fruit Gum, brown sugar, mild mesquite smoke, hot cinnamon candy, mild dry oak
👉🏻Finish: Growing and lingering hot cinnamon spice, mild brown sugar; hints of tart orange citrus; fairly dry with mild dry oak and char later on; long with a pleasant warmth

The nose of Copper & Cask Double Oak Bourbon has a fair amount of fruit flavors up front, reminiscent of Juicy Fruit Gum and cherry candy. In addition, light toffee, mild dry oak and a touch of cinnamon are there, as well. Finally, there is a hint of a mesquite smokiness with a tangy barbecue sauce. But, just a hint. The alcohol vapor is appropriate for the fairly high proof.

The taste has some continuation of the fruit flavors in the nose, with a bit of added brown sugar, hot cinnamon candy, mild mesquite smoke and mild dry oak. The hot cinnamon spice increases into the finish, with mild lingering brown sugar. Later on, dry oak and barrel char are more evident, but are not at all overpowering. There’s a touch of tart orange citrus, as well. The finish is long, with a pleasant warmth.

Conclusion

Copper & Cask Double Oak Bourbon has a unique combination of flavors. It’s a pleasant potpourri of fruit candy, hot cinnamon spice, some confectionary notes, dry oak and mild barrel char, with hints of mesquite smoke. While the origin of the tangy mesquite smoke is a bit of mystery, it nonetheless adds a pleasant, albeit unexpected, flavor. If this combination of flavors sounds interesting to you, then give Copper & Cask Double Oak Bourbon a try. I think you’ll enjoy it!
