“A Blend of Kentucky Straight Bourbon Whiskeys Finished in America Apple Brandy Barrels”
Copper & Kings Releases Their First Bourbon (or does it?)
I read with great interest the press release announcing this bourbon. Copper & Kings will release “something never-before-tasted from the brand: Bourbon”, it said. As I sipped on a glass of the barrel strength Copper & Kings Bourbon Whiskey Finished in Apple Brandy Barrels that I had filled last year as part of their “Bottle Your Own” program, I was a bit confused. Was that not bourbon?
Copper & Kings New Bourbon is Available Statewide (in Kentucky)
What I think the press release meant to say, was that Copper & Kings is proud to announce their first regular release of a bourbon. The bottle I was sipping on came from a single barrel, and was available only at the distillery. It also is an Indiana bourbon, whereas the new release is a blend of Kentucky Straight bourbons. In addition, the new release is available throughout Kentucky, not just at the distillery. So, don’t get me wrong; Copper & Kings certainly does have something to celebrate with their new bourbon! It’s just not the first bourbon that they have ever produced.
A Blend Of Kentucky Straight Bourbon Whiskeys
Copper & Kings Kentucky Straight Bourbon Whiskey finished in American Apple Brandy Barrels is a blend of 5, 10 and 15 year old Kentucky Straight bourbons. The percentages of each bourbon used are 64%, 24% and 12%, respectively. Furthermore, the mash bills have a rye content ranging from 10-21%. After blending, the bourbon is then finished for 12 months in their own American Apple Brandy barrels. Those barrels are serenaded while they are finishing by pulsating high decibel music as part of Copper & Kings sonic aging process.
Tasting Notes – Copper & Kings Bourbon Review
Let’s taste it:
🛏 Rested for 15 minutes in a Glencairn
👉🏻Nose: Apple; rye spices, like cloves; brown sugar & buttery caramel; pie crust; bit of spearmint and licorice; moderate alcohol.
👉🏻Taste: Fairly sweet with apples, some cloves, licorice, honey, caramel and brown sugar; dry oak
👉🏻Finish: The flavors linger with the dry oak becoming a bit more noticeable and being joined by moderate white pepper spice. Very warming, with a moderate burn and a moderately long finish.
Warm Apple Pie In A Bottle
The nose reminds me of an apple pie with a rich flaky crust. The taste does as well, with some sweet honey and caramel added. Notes of licorice, spearmint and cloves provide complementary flavors and add a nice complexity. The finish is very warming and brings some nice white pepper spice as well.
I am always hesitant with finished whiskeys. I never know if the finish will be subtle, a perfect complement to the whiskey’s flavors, or dominate them. In the case of Copper & Kings Bourbon, the balance is just north of midline, but it works. The apple is definitely noticeable, but not at all overpowering, and blends perfectly with the flavors of the bourbon.
This bourbon couldn’t have been released at a more appropriate time of year. It’s warm apple pie like flavors are just perfect for autumn, and the winter to come! Have you tried Copper & Kings Bourbon? What did you think? Cheers!🥃
