Small Batch Bourbon Whiskey
Denning’s Point Distillery
Please enjoy our Denning’s Point Beacon Bourbon Review!
Denning’s Point Distillery is a New York Farm Distilery located in New York’s scenic and historic Hudson Valley. We recently had the opportunity to visit them, check out their distillery and taste their spirits. For me, that was the whiskeys (although they have many others), and I enjoyed everything that I tried. However, due to limited space in our luggage, I could only buy one bottle. So, I decided upon their 100 proof Small Batch Beacon Bourbon. Thanks, Dan for the hospitality!
Where Is Denning’s Point Distillery?
The Denning’s Point Distillery is located within the city of Beacon, NY, just off of Main St, also known as Route 52 on Apple Maps. Their hours are limited, so plan ahead if you are wanting to visit. We actually showed up when they were closed, but Dan was kind enough to welcome us in. They have a small tasting bar up front, and a larger cocktail bar back in the distillery itself.
Denning’s Point Distillery uses grains grown within 50 miles of their facility, and they distill on a hybrid pot still with a small column. Their Beacon Bourbon comes in 100 proof and cask strength versions. It is made from a classic mash bill of 77% corn, 15% rye and 8% malted barley and is aged at least 4 years. In addition, the bottle is sealed with some of the easiest to open soft blue wax I have ever encountered. Thank you!!
Tasting Notes – Denning’s Point Beacon Bourbon Review
Let’s taste it:
🛏 Rested for 15 minutes in a Glencairn
👉Color: Deep Amber
👉🏻Nose: Rich, cookie dough, lightly buttered and toasted raisin bread & butterscotch; fairly sweet; hints of dried apricot and sweet, ripe, dark plums; bit of dry oak; relatively mild alcohol
👉🏻Taste: Cookie dough & lightly toasted raisin bread continue; light butterscotch; some sweet plums are still there as well; mild dry oak; moderately sweet with a full mouthfeel
👉🏻Finish: The flavors continue into the finish with mild barrel char, dry wood & growing white pepper spice becoming more dominant. There’s a hint of raspberry jam, with lingering raisins and sweetness, too, although the very end becomes fairly dry. Moderately long finish with a mild burn
Rich Pot Still Flavors
Beacon Bourbon has those rich flavors that only a pot still or hybrid still can provide. From the pastry like beginning to the growing white pepper spice in the finish, as well as some lingering dried fruit and jam, this bourbon is packed with flavor, which interestingly stays fairly consistent throughout the sip. In addition, at 100 proof, Denning’s Point Beacon Bourbon is quite easy to drink. In fact, the richness of the flavors seem to mask the proof, and I probably would have guessed that it was lower.
If you are a fan of full flavored pot distilled whiskeys like I am, then you’ll want to give Beacon Bourbon from Denning’s Point Distillery a try! Also, if you are ever in the Hudson Valley area, definitely stop by and see the distillery for yourself! Cheers!
