What is the ecozy Clario Block 2″ Large Ice Cube Maker?

The ecozy Clario Block 2″ Large Ice Cube Maker represents the brand’s premium countertop entry for whiskey enthusiasts who prefer clear square ice over spheres. It stands apart from countertop bullet-ice makers, focusing instead on delivering dense, extra-large, slow-melting 2-inch square ice cubes.

Designed as a high-capacity yet space-conscious machine for home bars and hosting, it employs an upgraded version of ecozy’s CrystalFlux technology to produce large transparent ice cubes directly on your counter. The unit is built with an internal water reservoir, designed to be completely portable without needing a direct water line hookup.

At the time of this review, the unit is priced at $329.99 on Amazon.

Important Usage Tips (From the Manufacturer)

  • Water Quality Matters: For pristine clarity, the manufacturer recommends using filtered or purified water with a Total Dissolved Solids (TDS) value below 200. High TDS water will result in cloudy ice full of trapped air bubbles. (A TDS meter is included, but should not be needed if distilled water is used.)
  • Settling Period: Before plugging the machine in for the very first time, let the unit stand upright for at least 1 hour to allow the refrigerant to settle properly.
  • Clearance Requirements: To maintain adequate air circulation and optimal cooling speed, make sure to leave at least 6 inches (15 cm) of clearance on all sides of the ice maker.
  • Ice Storage: While the insulated basket slows down melting inside the tray, the unit is not a freezer. For the best results, cubes should be moved to a standard kitchen freezer to preserve their shape and structural integrity.

First Use and Setup – ecozy Clario Block 2″ Large Ice Cube Maker Review

Getting the ecozy Clario Block Ice Cube Maker ready for action is a quick and straightforward process. Before making any ice, the unit must be cleaned.

The process is simple: when the ice maker is connected to power and not making ice, add water to the reservoir and press the Clean button to initiate the self-cleaning procedure. The display timer immediately sets to 15 minutes and counts down. Once the cleaning process finishes, remove the water drain plug under the front bottom of the unit to empty the tank, then dry the interior surfaces with a soft cloth.

The water reservoir of the ecozy Clario Block 2" Large Ice Cube Maker can be filled with the ice tray in place, or with it removed.

Making Ice

To start a cycle, fill the reservoir and select your preferred mode. In Standard Mode, the first cycle is programmed for 42 minutes.

Pro Tip: One design quirk to watch out for is finding the maximum fill level marker in the water reservoir. It sits along the front left corner. Therefore, when following the instructions and filling the reservoir with the ice basket in place, it is covered by the basket and quite difficult to see. I found that while you can eventually locate the line once you know where it is, the easiest and most practical workaround is to simply remove the ice basket entirely before filling the reservoir to the appropriate level.

Like the other ecozy units, the Clario Block is remarkably well-behaved when it comes to noise. Its volume level is equivalent to a quiet air conditioner running on low; it is not intrusive at all, and we could easily carry on a conversation or watch television right next to it without being bothered.

During my testing using the Standard Mode, the countdown timer hit zero at the 38 minutes 30 seconds mark, and the machine began harvesting, successfully dropping the first batch of ice at 40 minutes 45 seconds. This standard cycle produces two square cubes. The ice-making mold returned to its starting position by 43 minutes 30 seconds, and the countdown timer reset to 42 minutes for the second round at 44 minutes 20 seconds. Therefore, cycling is a little faster than advertised.

The machine builds up solid momentum as it runs. The second round dropped another 2 cubes at the 1 hour 28 minutes mark, with the timer resetting to 41 minutes. The third round dropped 2 more cubes at 2 hours 14 minutes.

The machine is highly efficient with its water usage, though you do have to be careful when adding water mid-run, as the plastic of the ice tray may fog and obscure your view and lead to an accidental overflow. After the fourth round dropped only a single cube (yielding a total of 7 cubes on the first reservoir fill), the machine signaled it was low on water. Interestingly, while I was evaluating the freshly dropped ice, the unit automatically started the next ice-making round, setting its timer to 40 minutes. Therefore, the ecozy Clario Block in actuality likely made 9 cubes on its first reservoir fill. When I quickly added water fearing there would not be enough, the condensation on the ice tray made it impossible to see the fill level, causing me to overflow the reservoir. To avoid this, I recommend either removing the ice tray before refilling, or emptying* your accumulated cubes to clear your line of sight and decrease condensation.

*Pro Tip: Having a few ice cubes in the ice tray helps maintain a low temperature and prevent the melting of newly produced ice. Since the first couple of ice cubes will have undergone the most melting and won’t be ones you will want to use in your drinks, it makes sense to just leave them in the ice tray. Their sacrifice will help maintain a low temperature in the tray, better preserving all the subsequent ice cubes.

Ice Basket Cooling and Melting Behavior

Because the ecozy Clario Block Cube Ice Maker relies on passive insulation rather than active freezer elements to preserve the harvested ice, you will notice some melting in the basket over time, particularly with the earliest batches.

For example, by the time the second batch of cubes dropped at 1 hour 28 minutes, the first two cubes had melted and decreased in size by approximately 25%. By the time the third batch fell, the first cube had stabilized at roughly 25% size reduction, while the second cube showed a 10% decrease. However melting of the subsequent cubes was minimal.

As melting occurs, the mechanical release holes in the early cubes grow larger—with one of the early cubes developing a hole wider than a finger. Depending on how the square blocks stack and pile up, the basket will typically hold anywhere from 7 to 10 ice cubes before triggering the “ice full” sensor.

Dual Modes: Standard vs. Eco Mode

The ecozy Clario Block 2″ Large Ice Cube Maker features two distinct production speeds, and choosing between them comes down to a choice of speed versus pristine clarity:

  • Standard Mode (42-minute cycles): This is the refined choice. The manual notes a typical cycle time of 42 minutes, which perfectly matched my real-world testing. The cubes produced are beautifully formed, dense, and remarkably clear, save for a few minor white strips on either end during the first cycles. After a few rounds, these strips cleared completely and the ice was essentially perfectly clear.
  • Eco Mode (30-minute cycles): In Eco mode, the cycle speed drops to 30 minutes as advertised. The resulting cubes are the exact same shape and size, but they are noticeably fissured throughout. However, the ice surrounding these fissures remains clear and the fissures “healed” somewhat with time.

Pro-Tip: Because having existing ice in the basket drastically slows down the melting of subsequent batches, you can use these two modes to your advantage. Try making your first batch or two in Eco Mode to rapidly chill the basket with sacrificial cubes. Once you have a few ice cubes in the tray, switch the machine over to Standard Mode for the rest of your runs. In addition, if you leave those first cubes in the tray each time you empty it, that will ensure that the tray area remains cold to prevent newly made ice from melting.

Ice Clarity and Aesthetics

Overall, the ice produced by the ecozy Clario Block 2″ Large Ice Cube Maker is clear, well-formed, and an aesthetically pleasing addition to any drink.

However, the ice cubes may not be entirely flawless initially. In my tests, some of the early Standard Mode cubes had thin white strips on either end, and there was the occasional minor deformity of a corner. However, as the machine runs, these white strips clear up completely, leaving essentially pristine, perfectly clear ice. Additionally, due to the CrystalFlux release mechanism, there is a noticeable but small hole and internal dimple at one end of each cube. However, unlike spheres where a dimple can look like an uneven defect, on these large square blocks, the deep circular indentation actually looks quite modern and cool in a glass.

(Note: The manual points out that you can adjust the ice cube solidity and minimize this hole by holding the Timer – button for 5 seconds until “D” appears, using the adjustments to increase the freezing cycle duration. The manual also notes that too long of a freezing time can result in adverse effects.)

Ease of Use and Ice Performance

To put these large clear ice cubes to a real-world test, I placed a cube in a rocks glass and poured 1.5 ounces (a standard pour) of JTS Brown Bourbon (100 proof) directly over it at room temperature.

Here is how the 2-inch square ice cube held up at 5-minute intervals:

  • 5 Minutes: The cube proved to be highly efficient at cooling. There was little change in its size, with the ice cube losing no more than 10% of its starting volume as it rapidly brought the 100-proof bourbon down to a cool drinking temperature.
  • 10 Minutes: As expected, melting occurred primarily on the submerged lower portion of the ice cube. The exposed top of the block remained virtually unchanged. The cube otherwise retained its shape and lost no more than 20% of its initial volume. Dilution of the whiskey was minimal.
  • 15 Minutes: There has been further melting of the submerged portion of the ice cube, with the exposed portion only slightly smaller. The volume of the ice cube had probably not decreased more than 30%. Some mild dilution is evident, but the bourbon maintains plenty of its flavor.
  • 20 Minutes: There has been little additional melting, with the ice cube now around 40% of its original size. Some dilution has necessarily occurred, but the bourbon still retains plenty of flavor. At this point, many people would have finished their drink by now.
  • 25 Minutes: The ice cube has continued to melt, and is now around 50% of its original size. It still maintains some semblance of its original shape with the melting of the ice cube continuing to be greatest below the liquid’s surface. The dilution of the bourbon is becoming more evident, however, the majority of people would likely have finished their drink by now.
