The 2024 PGA Championship

The PGA Championship takes place the week of May 13 at Valhalla Golf Club in Louisville, KY. As the official bourbon of the event, Elijah Craig is commemorating the Championship’s return to Kentucky with a special PGA edition of their 94 proof Elijah Craig Small Batch Bourbon.

What Makes Elijah Craig PGA Edition Different?

Elijah Craig 2024 PGA Championship Commemorative Edition Bourbon is a bit different from “regular” 94 proof Elijah Craig Small Batch Bourbon. The first thing everyone will notice is the packaging. The bottles are adorned with a neck label featuring the PGA Championship’s Wanamaker Trophy, a gold coin emblazoned cork showing the 2024 PGA Championship logo and a face label prominently showcasing the “Official Bourbon” designation along with the PGA Championship logo.

It’s an attractive bottle, and the coin in the stopper cap is particularly cool. However, as bourbon lovers, we are more interested in what is in the bottle, than the bottle itself. As it turns out, all of the barrels used in crafting the Elijah Craig PGA Edition were pulled from Rickhouses P, 1G and A, in honor of the PGA Championship. In fact, we are given the exact percentages: 25% from rickhouse P, 61% from rickhouse 1G and 14% from rickhouse A. So, while that’s clever and all, did those barrels have an effect on the flavor? Well, yes and no.

Elijah Craig PGA Edition vs Elijah Craig Small Batch Bourbon

The flavor profile of Elijah Craig PGA Championship Edition Small Batch Bourbon is quite similar to regular Elijah Craig. It’s got all the vanilla, caramel, cherry, brown sugar, oak & cedar that we’ve all come to expect. In isolation, I don’t think I would notice that it is different from regular Elijah Craig Bourbon. However, side by side, differences are evident. The PGA Edition’s flavors are a bit more full. It has more evident toffee and lightly burnt caramel in the nose, and the taste and finish are a bit more spicy and dry. Specifically, there are more pronounced tannins, dry oak, char, and black pepper spice extending into the finish.

A special cocktail, the Elijah Craig Mulligan, has also been crafted for the event.

Conclusion

Elijah Craig 2024 PGA Championship Edition Small Batch Bourbon has packaging and flavor differences that make it unique. Nonetheless, it is intentionally targeted at a specific audience. Therefore, if you are both an Elijah Craig Bourbon and PGA fan, you’ll almost certainly want to get this bottle for your collection. On the other hand, for bourbon lovers who are not really golf fans, it would still be a nice bottle to have, given the attractive packaging and flavor differences. Also, the cost is just a small bit more than Elijah Craig Small Batch, unlike the pricing for many other limited edition whiskeys.
