Five Brothers Bourbon Review

A month or so ago, Heaven Hill released Square 6 Bourbon which is sold only at the Evan Williams Bourbon Experience. It was the first bourbon to ever be released to the public that was distilled in the artisanal distillery at the Evan Williams Bourbon Experience. Next, it was the newly renamed and renovated Heaven Hill Bourbon Experience's turn to get its own bourbon. At the time of the grand opening of the new visitor center, Five Brothers Bourbon made its first appearance. It is sold only at the Heaven Hill Bourbon Experience and initially was in short supply, although now it seems to be more readily available.

A month or so ago, Heaven Hill released Square 6 Bourbon which is sold only at the Evan Williams Bourbon Experience. It was the first bourbon to ever be released to the public that was distilled in the artisanal distillery at the Evan Williams Bourbon Experience. Next, it was the newly renamed and renovated Heaven Hill Bourbon Experience’s turn to get its own bourbon. At the time of the grand opening of the new visitor center, Five Brothers Bourbon made its first appearance. It is sold only at the Heaven Hill Bourbon Experience and initially was in short supply, although now it seems to be more readily available.

The Backstory

Made from Heaven Hill’s standard bourbon mash bill (78% corn, 10% rye and 12% malted barley), this bourbon is a blend of bourbons of 5 different ages, from 5 to 9 years old. Five Brothers and 5 different ages of bourbon in the mix. “What’s the significance?” you may be thinking. Well, I’m glad you picked up on that! This bourbon was named to commemorate the 5 Shapira brothers who originally started the Heaven Hill Distillery back in 1935. As the label states, “This blending of ages honors the courage, dedication and solidarity of those five brothers.” Those five brothers are pictured on the label. They are David, Ed, Gary, George and Mose. Eventually they bought out the other investors, making Heaven Hill the largest family owned and operated distillery in America today.

So that’s the backstory; but what is this bourbon like?

Tasting Notes

Let’s taste it:

🛌 Rested for 15 minutes in a Glencairn

👉Nose: Peanuts, baking spices, mild cinnamon, brown sugar, cherry, light caramel; relatively mild alcohol
👉Taste: Black tea, honey, baking spices, sweet caramel, light peanuts…
👉Finish: …continue into the finish; oak and char build, but stay fairly subdued. Mild burn. Long finish.

Summary

I enjoy Heaven Hill bourbons, so it is not surprising that I like this one as well. Which Heaven Hill bourbon is it similar too? Great question, because since they all use the same mash bill, they should all taste the same – right? Well not exactly. There is so much that creates the flavor of bourbon as we all know. Five Brothers Bourbon has similar characteristics to the Evan Williams Bottled-In-Bond, but the addition of older bourbons into the mix really makes a difference. The flavor is fuller and overall more mature, and there’s also a little more sweetness.

Have you tried this new bourbon yet? What did you think? Would you like to read our review of the somewhat similar tasting Evan Williams Bottled-In-Bond Bourbon or our Square 6 Bourbon review? Cheers!🥃
