Background
Frey Ranch Distillery, located in Fallon, Nevada, is a family-owned operation known for its farm-to-glass approach, growing all of its grains on-site. The distillery’s core lineup includes Frey Ranch Four Grain Bourbon, Frey Ranch Bottled-in-Bond Straight Rye, and Frey Ranch Farm Strength Uncut Bourbon.
Frey Ranch Farm Strength Rye is the latest addition to that core lineup. Bottled uncut at 124.52 proof, it follows the success of their Farm Strength Bourbon, offering a higher proof version of their rye whiskey. Given the reception of that release, it makes sense to see that approach extended to their rye.

Tasting Notes – Frey Ranch Farm Strength Rye Review
Let’s taste it:
🛏 Rested: 15 minutes in a Glencairn glass
👉🏻 Nose: Mildly sweet honey, tart limes, light caramel, rye spices like cloves, touch of licorice; tart grapefruit later on; touch of sweet graham crackers; alcohol vapor less than expected for the proof
👉🏻 Taste: Mildly sweet, caramel, lime and grapefruit, hints of licorice later, light rye spices, touch of dry oak and char
👉🏻 Finish: Lingering sweet grapefruit, tart lime, licorice and caramel; rapidly fairly dry; increasing moderate black pepper spice; long, hints of dry wood with lingering sweetness, citrus and licorice; pleasant deep warmth
Citrus, Honey, and Rye Spice Balance
On the nose of Frey Ranch Farm Strength Rye, the citrus is most apparent. First it is tart limes, later joined by grapefruits. There is mild sweet honey and a touch of caramel, as well. Relatively mild rye spices, such as cloves, and a hint of black licorice, add nice complementary notes. There are also subtle baked goods in the background; something a bit like sweet graham crackers.
The taste begins moderately sweet, from simple syrup and caramel. Like the nose, there are similar citrus and spices, which become more dominant later on, and are increasingly evident in subsequent sips. The flavors linger and fade into the finish, which quickly becomes fairly dry and spicy. Nonetheless, mild sweetness and citrus remain to the very end, as well.
High Proof That Drinks Lower with Citrus and Spice – Frey Ranch Farm Strength Rye Review
Overall, Frey Ranch Farm Strength Rye is a citrus-forward rye, with a nice balance of spices and sweeter notes. However, if I had to guess, I would not have thought that this rye was 124.52 proof! From the nose through the palate it drinks much lower than that. It is only the deep warmth at the end of the finish that might give it away.
I am definitely a fan of this rye! If you enjoy a citrus-forward rye with a nice balance of sweeter and spicier notes and a touch of black licorice, then you’ll want to give Frey Ranch Farm Strength Rye a try. Have you tried it? What did you think? Cheers!🥃
