Green River Distilling Introduces The Distillery Series

Green River Distilling Co. has been steadily expanding their portfolio in recent years while continuing to showcase the quality of the whiskey coming from their historic Owensboro distillery. Through different proofs, finishes, or specific rickhouse selections, Green River’s new Distillery Select releases “will celebrate straightforward innovations rooted in tradition.”

For the inaugural release in the series, thirteen choice barrels were hand selected from prime maturation locations in Warehouse B, where temperatures regularly climb well over 100 degrees. Warehouse B is one of the distillery’s clay tile warehouses. Green River Distillery Select Toasted Double Oak Bourbon begins as an eight-year-old Kentucky straight bourbon before spending an additional six months in a toasted new American oak barrel. Bottled at 115.1 proof and available exclusively at the Owensboro distillery and the Louisville tasting room, this limited release offers the opportunity to experience Green River’s oldest bourbon in a richer double oak expression.

Tasting Notes – Green River Distillery Select Toasted Double Oak Bourbon Review

Let’s taste it:

🛏 Rested: 15 minutes in a Glencairn glass

👉🏻 Nose: Moderately sweet; maple, vanilla, mild tannins, sweet oak; dark stone fruits like cherries and plums; alcohol vapor appropriate for the proof; richer toffee later on.
👉🏻 Taste: Mildly sweet; toffee, hints of coffee, tannins, oak, dark cherries, sweet oranges.
👉🏻 Finish: Considerable white pepper spice; tannins; lingering toffee and hints of sweet fruit; mild char later on; long; deep warmth.

Mature Oak Meets Rich Flavor

Right from the start, the maturity of the bourbon, the high-temperature aging, and the effects of the secondary barrel are evident. The nose of Green River Distillery Select Toasted Double Oak Bourbon has beautiful rich flavors, complemented by dark stone fruits and sweet oak. On the palate, the effects of the maturation locations are evident, with plenty of oak tannins. However, they are balanced by a mild sweetness, with rich toffee and fruits from the barrels.

As might be expected, the finish does have a considerable amount of white pepper spice, with a healthy dose of tannins. However, they are complemented by the lingering toffee and hints of sweet fruit. In the very end, there is just a touch of barrel char, and I am left with a deep warmth.

Green River Distillery Select Toasted Double Oak Bourbon Review – Who Will Enjoy This Bourbon?

This is a delicious bourbon! It conjures up memories of Bardstown Bourbon Company’s Cathedral Oak, which is quite the compliment, as that was my favorite bourbon of last year. If you enjoy a bourbon that has full, rich flavors, balanced by a healthy dose of oak and tannins and tempered by darker fruits, then you will almost certainly enjoy Green River Distillery Select Toasted Double Oak Bourbon.
