Heaven Hill 6 Year Bottled-In-Bond Bourbon Review

I was debating on whether to include Heaven Hill 6 Year Bottled-In-Bond Bourbon in my value bottled in bond series since it is no longer available as of around a few years or so ago. However, since it was definitely a great value, selling for only around $13-15 in its final days and had a bit of a cult following, it seemed to have earned its spot in this line up. This bourbon, affectionately known as "White Label" was a Kentucky only product and was one of the best values in bourbon in its day.

A Great Value Bourbon In Its Day

I was debating on whether to include Heaven Hill 6 Year Bottled-In-Bond Bourbon in my value bottled in bond series since it is no longer available as of around a few years or so ago. However, since it was definitely a great value, selling for only around $13-15 in its final days and had a bit of a cult following, it seemed to have earned its spot in this line up. This bourbon, affectionately known as “White Label” was a Kentucky only product and was one of the best values in bourbon in its day.

Introduced in 1939

Heaven Hill first introduced its namesake Bottled-In-Bond bourbon in 1939, originally as a 4 year old. According to Heaven Hill’s website, it quickly became the number one selling bourbon in the state of Kentucky. It has gone through various iterations over the years, with the most recent version being the 7yr old.

Just A Good Solid Bourbon

It has been a while since I last tasted Heaven Hill 6 Year Bottled-In-Bond Bourbon, and I had forgotten what a good bourbon it is. This is not a particularly complex bourbon. Nor is it overproofed or overaged, like some of Heaven Hill’s premium bourbons. But, it’s not meant to be. It’s just a good bourbon, with all the flavor characteristics one would expect. It’s perfect as a “daily drinker”, neat or in a mixed drink.

The Mash Bill

Like most of Heaven Hill Distillery’s bourbons, this 6 year old Bottled-In-Bond Bourbon is made from Heaven Hill’s standard mash bill of 78% Corn, 10% Rye and 12% Malted Barley. Somewhat surprisingly, this bourbon is charcoal filtered. It says it right there on the label, along with “Mellow and Smooth”. However, that kind of wording blurs the lines a bit between bourbon and Tennessee Whiskey. That is because the distinguishing feature of Tennessee Whiskey is the Lincoln County Process, which is essentially filtering the whiskey through a large quantity of charcoal. In Jack Daniel’s case, that charcoal is made from the sugar maple and Jack Daniel refers to their whiskey as being “charcoal mellowed”. I am sure you can see how that might get a little confusing.

Tasting Notes

Let’s taste Heaven Hill 6 Year Bottled-In-Bond Bourbon:

🛌 Rested for 15 minutes in a Glencairn

👉Nose: Fairly light nose, with cherry, honey, milk chocolate, caramel, light rye spices, light peanuts & light alcohol burn
👉Taste: Sugar sweetness, caramel, touch of peanuts & char
👉Finish: Sweetness initially, turning drier with time; char, oak, hint of peanuts with a light burn and a moderately long and dry finish

A Special Bourbon

Heaven Hill 6 Year Bottled-In-Bond was a special bourbon in its day. It was very reasonably priced, 6 years old, tasty and a Bottled-In-Bond. The fact that it was only available in Kentucky gave it even more of a mystique. Have you had this bourbon? Isn’t it special? Cheers!🥃
