Out with the 6 Year. In with the 7 Year.

A number of years ago, Heaven Hill 7 Year Bottled-In-Bond Bourbon replaced their 6yr old Bottled-In-Bond, which had been one of my favorite value bourbons. The 7 year Bottled-In-Bond Bourbon was first launched in October 2019, with a limited distribution that mysteriously did not include Kentucky. The suggested retail price was $39.99, substantially higher than that of the 6yr that it replaced. The squared edges of the 6yr’s bottle were replaced with rounded ones, the label became more refined, and the plastic screw top was replaced with a real cork and wooden cap.

Over the years, the MSRP had increased to $49.99, but distribution and availability also increased, as well. However, the price is apparently again going down, with it now often found for $45-$50, or even lower in some places. In addition, Heaven Hill Bottled in Bond Bourbon is now sold in Kentucky.

By now, the 6 Year version is, at this point, a distant memory, so this comparison really is just for historical purposes. Anyway, what else is different between the 6 year and 7 Year Bottled In Bond Bourbons? Well, the mash bill is the same for both, similar to most of Heaven Hill’s bourbons: 78% corn, 10% rye and 12% malted barley. It could be aged in different rickhouses and/or on different floors, but that information is not provided. So is it any better than the less expensive 6yr? Let’s find out!

Tasting Notes – Heaven Hill 7 Year Bottled-In-Bond Bourbon

Let’s taste it:

🛏 Rested for 15 minutes in a Glencairn

👉🏻Nose: Dark cherries, caramel, vanilla, powdered sugar, light mild chocolate; cedar and dry oak; moderate alcohol
👉🏻Taste: Fairly sweet with cherries, caramel and oak; rapidly developing tannins and white pepper spice
👉🏻Finish: Lingering sweetness and cherries, but also tannins with growing but never overpowering white pepper spice; spice and dry oak continue for a while, with a touch of char later on; fairly long finish with a moderate burn

Heaven Hill Bottled-In-Bond has classic bourbon flavors. They are fairly fruit forward and rich from the start, becoming dryer and spicier in the long finish. It’s another very enjoyable bourbon, well suited to bourbon drinkers looking for classic bourbon flavors.

What’s the verdict on Heaven Hill 7 Year Bottled-In-Bond Bourbon?

The 7yr has richer, fuller flavors, than the 6 year version, from the nose to the finish. While both of these bourbons are very good, the extra year of aging and upscale bottling really seem to have a positive effect on the bourbon’s flavor. Unlike its extinct cousin, Heaven Hill Bottled-In-Bond 7 Year Bourbon does not proclaim itself to be charcoal filtered. That may be having some effect on the fuller flavor as well.

Summary

When Heaven Hill Bottled in Bond 7 Year Bourbon was first released, I wanted to dislike it, since it was originally not sold in Kentucky. However, it turns out that I like it. I like it quite a bit, especially now, as its price has dereased and it has become more available. Whisky Advocate named this bourbon #4 in its list of the top 20 whiskies of 2019, so they seemed to think it was pretty good, too. Since then, it has continued to win awards, including a Double Gold in the 2024 International Spirits Challenge and A Double Platinum in the 2024 Ascot Awards. Have you tried it? What did you think?
