Tasting Notes — Heaven Hill Double Mash Bottled-in-Bond Bourbon Review
Let’s taste it:
🛏 Rested: 15 minutes in a Glencairn glass
👉🏻 Nose: Rye spices, caramel, sweet raspberry jam, dark plums, a touch of cinnamon and tart orange peel, light oak; alcohol vapor appropriate for the proof
👉🏻 Taste: Mild simple syrup sweetness, caramel, tannins and oak
👉🏻 Finish: Fairly dry; oak, lingering simple syrup and mild tannins; mild white pepper spice later; lingering spice and warmth
Fruit, Spice and a Surprisingly Mature Character
The nose of Heaven Hill Double Mash Bottled-in-Bond Bourbon is mildly sweet with noticeable fruit, but rye spices and touches of cinnamon and oak are there as well. The fruit notes decrease in the taste, while mild oak remains and some tannins appear. By the finish, the mouthfeel becomes much drier, with developing white pepper spice and lingering mild tannins and oak. The flavors suggest to me a bourbon older than its stated nine years.
The wheated and traditional (rye) mash bills work well together. The nose probably has the more expected combination of the two, with fruit as well as spice. However, as the sip goes on, the flavors turn drier and spicier, with noticeable but mild oak. The drier and spicier character might be expected to be due to the rye component. However, Heaven Hill Double Mash Bottled-in-Bond Bourbon has characteristics suggesting an older age, and wheated bourbon can definitely change its profile to become drier and spicier as it matures. Having said that, the wheated component is probably rounding out the palate a bit, contributing some softness and sweetness that might otherwise be absent.
A Well-Rounded and Enjoyable Double Mash Bourbon
Overall, Heaven Hill Double Mash Bottled-in-Bond Bourbon is definitely not simply an older version of Heaven Hill 7-Year Bottled-in-Bond Bourbon. The additional age and the wheated component are almost certainly playing a role in rounding out the flavor profile and making this a very enjoyable pour. If you are a fan of bourbon with a more mature character, starting out with some sweetness and fruit and finishing drier with some spice, then you’ll definitely want to give this bourbon a try. Have you had the Heaven Hill Double Mash Bottled-in-Bond Bourbon? What did you think? Cheers!🥃
