High West Distillery and the Legend of the Jackalope Review
First released in 2009 as a pioneer of the “bourbon plus rye” category, Bourye is High West Distillery’s limited release blend of straight whiskeys. The 2026 Bourye release features an elevated ABV which highlights the elegance and complexity of its 10 to 19-year-old whiskeys while preserving the rich flavors developed through extended aging, according to the brand. High West re-evaluated Bourye in 2026 to better showcase the balance, depth, and approachability that emerges in whiskey over long maturation, offering a nod to the jackalope, who they describe as the region’s most charming trickster.

Tasting Notes — High West Bourye 2026 Review
Let’s taste it:
🛏 Rested: 15 minutes in a Glencairn glass
👉🏻 Nose: Mildly sweet, honey, light cloves, caraway seeds, oranges and tart orange peel, sweet mixed berries, raspberry jam, hints of dried apricots and cinnamon, touch of anise, background sweet floral notes; mild oak; alcohol vapor appropriate for the proof
👉🏻 Taste: Mild honey sweetness, raspberry jam; later tart orange citrus and mild rye bread; mild oak; developing dryness and spice later on
👉🏻 Finish: Tart citrus, moderate black pepper, fairly long and increasingly dry, but with lingering mild sweetness, jam, spice, caraway seeds, cloves and coriander; touch of dry wood and char; pleasant deep warmth
A Layered and Complex Profile
The 2026 High West Bourye is a layered complex pour. The nose has a multitude of flavors, that differ from sniff to sniff. I realize that I have listed a vast number of them, but at one time or another, they were all there. With everything from cloves, anise, tart oranges and a hint of cinnamon, to sweeter flavors such as floral notes, sweet berries, jam and honey, there’s something in here for everyone. The taste progresses from being mildly sweet to increasingly dry, with a mild honey sweetness and a healthy dose of raspberry jam up front, with tart orange citrus later on.
As the sip comes to a close, the mouthfeel becomes quite dry, but a medley of flavors linger on, including mild jam, spice, caraway seeds, cloves, coriander, mild oak and char. In the end I am left with the remnants of those flavors on my tongue, with a pleasant deep warmth in my chest.
Final Thoughts on High West Bourye 2026
I tasted the 2026 High West Bourye on three separate occasions to try to fully understand its flavors. I feel like the rye notes dominate overall, but the bourbons must be making a contribution to the many other flavors. And, the age must be, too. Whatever the source, it all adds up to a delicious whiskey. I had very high hopes for this one, and it definitely does not disappoint! Have you tried the High West Bourye 2026? What did you think? Cheers!🥃
