A Barrel Strength Toasted Barrel Blend

HK Young Toasted Barrel Blend Bourbon is a barrel strength release aged six years and bottled at 121.2 proof. This expression, known as the “No Time For Rye” batch, continues the brand’s focus on exploring how toasted barrels can shape and emphasize the aromas and flavors of whiskey.

For this blend, HK Young partnered with Independent Stave Company (ISC) to develop several different toasted barrel profiles. The brand starts with a custom blend of its own bourbons finished in three different toasted barrels, then integrates additional Kentucky Straight Bourbon Whiskeys to layer further character into the final blend. The result is a whiskey designed to highlight the range of flavors that can emerge from the same mashbill when finished in different toasted oak barrels.

👉🏻 Finish: Very long; lingering flavors with dark syrupy sweetness at first; later drier with moderate black pepper and hot cinnamon spice / red hots; mild tannins; mild dry wood; lingering mild sweetness as well

Dean

Flavor Profile – HK Young Toasted Barrel Blend Bourbon Review

This is a complex, layered bourbon which continually evolves from start to finish. The nose seems to have different flavors with every sniff. The taste again has quite a bit of a syrupy viscosity, but there are also tannins and tart citrus that are a bit unexpected. Likewise, Dean noted corn notes in both the nose and palate, which often have diminished in a bourbon of this age.

The finish is very long and evolving, shifting from sweetness toward a drier combination of oak and pepper and cinnamon spice. Overall, this is a deliciously complex pour.

Layered and Evolving from Nose to Finish

Both Dean and I really liked this one, and its ever changing flavors. HK Young Toasted Barrel Blend Bourbon shows impressive complexity for a six-year bourbon, with an extremely long finish and robust flavors. Dean summed it up nicely, saying that he “loves this and would buy it twice!” To that, I would have to agree.

Have you tried the HK Young Toasted Barrel Blend Bourbon “No Time For Rye” batch? What did you think? Cheers!🥃
