There are calories in bourbon?
Calories from bourbon are almost entirely derived from the ethanol itself. As a result, the lower the proof, the lower the calorie count.
For example, a 1.5 oz pour of 80 proof bourbon contains approximately 14 grams of alcohol, which equates to about 98 calories. Compare that to a 1.5 oz pour of 135 proof bourbon with 23.6 grams of alcohol—or roughly 165 calories.
So, switching to the lower proof pour doesn’t just cut your alcohol consumption by more than 40%, it cuts your calorie intake as well. I’m feeling thinner already!

What is “A Drink”?
According to the National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism (NIAAA) the current definition of a standard drink is 14 g of pure alcohol (or 0.6 ounces of ethanol).
A recent article in the journal Circulation clarified that as one standard drink equals:
- 12 ounces of regular beer (≈5% ABV)
- 5 ounces of wine (12% ABV)
- 1.5 ounces of 80-proof liquor (40% ABV).
Using this definition, 1.2 oz of 100-proof liquor equals one standard drink—slightly less than a typical 1.5 oz bar pour. At higher proofs, the volume required drops even further. For example, only 0.92 oz of a 130-proof spirit constitutes one standard drink.
That means if someone pours a 2 oz serving of 130-proof bourbon at home, they’ve actually consumed about 2.2 standard drinks!

What is “Moderate Drinking”?
The National Academies for Sciences, Engineering and Medicine (NASEM)—whose work helps inform the U.S. Dietary Guidelines, defined moderate drinking in their recent Review of Evidence on Alcohol and Health as consumption within or below the NIAAA/DGA limits for low-risk drinking and drinking in moderation:
- Up to 2 drinks per day for men
- Up to 1 drink per day for women
- No more than 14 drinks per week for men
- No more than 7 drinks per week for women
It is worth noting that the recently released summary of U.S. Dietary Guidelines for Americans 2025-2030 no longer emphasizes specific numeric thresholds, instead stating more broadly:
“Limit alcoholic beverages — consume less alcohol for better overall health.”
